| Boogie Mark II I am picking one up in a bit. It is an early one with just the boogie logo, built on a princeton chassis. Its a dual 6l6 version.
Any thoughts? Ideas?
I am picking this up in a bit, as in half an hour.

| I don't really have any ideas, but I am thinking you should give us a sweet review of it when you get it.
...but I guess that is sort of a given.
Edit: Are you going to use this to replace anything or are you just more getting it for funsies?

| Not my favorite in the Mark line (I would take an IIc or a IV personally) but it's a great amp for sure. Nothing I can say would help though I'm sure. Review and pics a must!

This negatively affected my tone in ways that I just can't describe.
Then, on a whim, a few years ago I wandered into a Bath and Body Works store at a local mall and picked up some of their gentle foaming anti-bacterial hand cleansers.
The difference in my guitar's sound is so wickedly improved that I no longer feel the need to buy a new amp or pedals or even strings...EVER!
So, it's my belief that tone is in the soap.
Thank you and goodnight. | |

| I have no idea which mark II it is. Has no graphic eq. It is probably fairly early. If you turn all the boosts on, it turns to MUD. I replaced the original EV with a black shadow. The EV is a little bit shot I was told. Going to see if it is reparable.
I got it because of how much I got it for...
Trust me, you don't want to know.
It has a serial number with 4 digits. 35xx Made April 12, 1979.

| So thoughts...
Its a really hard amp to get a good sound out of. You literally cough on the knobs and the sound changes. (Yes, I mean literally I have quite a cough at the moment)
The cascading nature of the clean preamp into the lead presents some unique challenges in preserving the highs.
I still can't figure out how the footswitch jack on the bottom of the chassis is supposed to work or what it cintrols. (Mesa Boogie said reverb on/off, only online mention said it controls the boost circuit. Being as the boost circuit is over-ridden when it is engaged I am inclined to think the latter is correct)
If I could footswitch the boost for the clean channel this amp would be perfect.
With the boost on, it has a wonderful clean channel, thick and beautiful sounding. Without the boost, the cleans sound very thin. However, with the boost and the lead channel engaged it is bassy mush, without it, it is clear and crisp and sounds good. So I will continue to try to monkey with the boost circuit and the footswitch. I wonder if in the removal of the weird mark 2 switchable ss 2 gain stages a previous owner did, something in the boost footswitch jack got disconnected. (Not a stretch, they are right next to each other.

| It may be in disrepair if it sounds that bad.

It is not "that bad" as you put it, but dialing in a nice clean and lead sound is a trick. The issue with the gain switch is it adds this wonderful, full sound to the clean channel. However if you run the more gain plus lead simultaneously it sounds like when you have excessively hot pickups and lose all the highs. (and I mean all of them.) If the footswitch on the bottom controls this as I think it does then dialing it in would be a simple matter of getting the switch operable.
Everything works and switches as it should, but the cascading preamps are a challenge.

| Well, what stands out to me about it is, it sounds like you may need to replace the pots.

Why? The pots are fine. They are just hypersensitive.

Know what the footswitch jack is on the underside of a Mark II?

It does seemingly nothing on the reverb, but seems to effect the boost, sort of. When you plug it in, the push/pull pot seems to be over-ridden. But a normal, SPST latching switch does not work to activate the boost.
