Yeah, if it is technique...

Anyway, I am not sure that isn't downgrading to be honest.

The other thing is this...

Stock sells faster. Unless you are dang good at making hot rods.

Also, selling a guitar like this before you figure out what went wrong is IMO a really, really bad idea.

what?

and guys, i fixed it!!! even though me and tech both stretched strings, i guess we didnt stretch enough. my guitar teacher wasnt in the room when i arrived for lessons bu the teacher next door (a major strat gy) was just sitting around so i asked him, and the first thing he did was tried stretching. he must have stretched hard, cuz my e dropped to a d, my g to a E, stuff like that. he stretched the living snot out of it, and now it stays in tune perfectly.

i still might take the les paul though, just because i like that tone more, and the more sustain and stuff. i just flat out like les pauls more

Did you watch him so you know how to properly stretch out the strings next time?

Aren't you glad you didn't sell it and have that problem again?

Oh, that changes things. I didn't realize it was an MIM Strat, I was thinking more along the lines of a cheapo Wal-Mart guitar.

I have an MIM Strat, I've never had problems with it, and it's one of my favorite guitars. It wasn't always though, it spent most of it's life under my bed while I hoped and prayed for a Les Paul. I finally got one (Gibson Les Paul BFG, awesome guitar) and I'm really glad I was patient and didn't sell my Strat. It grew on me big time. If I were you I'd save up for an Epi Les Paul (or maybe a Gibson Les Paul Studio if you can be really patient) and keep your Strat. That way you'll have much more versatility than if you just had one or the other.

but right now while i will only be able to afford one guitar, is the lp much of a downgrade? especially since i'll have either a pg+= pickup, or 80 bucks on a new pickup.

i just like that tone so much more

That's good news...

Hi, just joined, hello to all! Thought I'd jump in here. See you got it solved, that's great! Couple thoughts on the string/tuning thing...I like your description as you really do need to stretch those puppies out. I do it this way -

when putting on a new set, I get them all on, and start them out low and loose. Starting with the low E, I firmly pull/stretch it up in 3 places - over the 3rd fret and then about the7th, and then about the middle of the string. I pull it and hold it and streeeetch. The tuning drops down doing that and I tune the gear up about a half turn. Then I do the same thing on each string going up - E - A - D- G - B - (HI) E. Then I start over and repeat, each time tuning the string up about a half turn after stretching it.

I do this several times until it starts to sound like it's getting up to pitch. Then I just tune it up and continue stretching each string like that until they won't go no mo'. I don't "yank" the strings (which I did for many years) as that can tweeze that one area of the string, making the winds stretch out a tiny bit differently in that spot, effecting your overall intonation. I go for an overall stretch of the string so it's consistent over the whole length.

Your teacher sounds like he knows the drill well so if he disagreed with that approach, I'd defer to his advice as he's there with you and your guitar. But I can say, this method works for me.
In fact, if I'm playing a lot, I'll put on a set of strings, stretch them out and then take them off, and pack 'em away for "quickie" changes on the fly. (locking tuners come in handy there too)
I suspect they "relax" back a little when they're not under pull/pressure, but it seems to help the retune a little in emergencies.

Best wishes
....

chubs ...sometimes the pickups are to close to the strings and when you tune the note bounces around try and lower one or the other pups and see if that helps for a more solid tuning.
