almost out of harddrive space

I have a 500gb harddrive in my iMac and I never thought I'd fill it up. I'm down to 62gb free. At the rate I download TV shows, i'm going to have to buy an external drive soon.

Oh dear. I'd go for a 1 TB external for all of your tv shows. Then store everything else on your internal hard drive.

Whoa, kids today and taking up harddisk space! It wasn't that long ago that I was still trying to juggle 60 gigs around. :P

But yeah, definitely get a 1-1.5 TB harddisk for TV shows and what not. It wouldn't hurt to regularly back up onto it, as well.

It's better to use separate drives for backup.

I have a time capsule for my backups. Though if I add an external drive to my iMac I'll need to add an external drive to my Time Capsule to match the space.

Better to use separate drives? Yes, that's really cost effective when I have a 750GB external drive, and an 80 internal.
Or not.

It only takes like, 67GB to back up your entire system and program files. I've got a couple old 40GB's in my basement that I'm thinking of backing some stuff up onto.

I back up my personal files, which takes up most of my space... not my program files...

Depends on preferences and what you're backing up. For an organisation, you'd want separate drives, tapes, etc. But for home use, it's not so bad.

At any rate, you are somewhat correct in saying that. But as for a cost effective way for an average home user, it's not a big deal which way you go.

True, true. I'll probably just wind up getting seperate external drives, one for me media/files, and another for backing up my software.

backing up your media/files is more important that backing up your software. that you have disks for or can easily install again.

I don't see what the whole "Backing up software" point is. It won't work when you restore it, so you should have the disks of any software you've paid for, or the software should be freely downloadable from the internets.

Maybe he means, more specifically, installers, updates and settings.

You wouldn't want to reformat and have to download an installer, and updates for the program again, and then have to readjust the settings to how you like it.
