do you find that a similar theme crops up in most of your songs, no matter how wide apart you have written them?

If similar themes keep popping up (you're stuck in a rut)
try using Brian Eno's Oblique Strategies, subtitled, over 100 worthwhile dilemmas. They work incredibly well!
For example, consider this one that I just picked at random: Don't avoid what is easy.
How does that click with you?

yeah in most of my songs i end up singing about God, but surely thats a good thing when im a christian?

No it's not a bad thing, but this was just a way to help you be more creative in the way you write about God.
