Standback is the way to go. You can use it on most of your amps - I do. Your amp stays on the ground, which some players insist is a must. It's lighter and more compact than even a stapler; well lighter anyway. I just throw mine in the back of the amp when I am playing out. And, you don't have to drill into your amp to put on screws as you would with typical tilt back legs. But, as Tom pointed out, a beam blocker is also a good solution to "ice pick" highs.

Fair enough.

I don't play guitar in a band, just at home so it's something I don't really think about.

But this is also why I love(d) my 8x10 bass cab.
*sigh*

Still important. You want to hear the sound your amp is really putting out, which is what you get standing in front of it. If you're off to the side, you're not getting the full affect.
