Why would you not buy a Mac Pro & cheap LCD screen? The total cost is defiantly more, but isn't it worth it?
Might, but by the point that my band will have made enough money to fork over for a Mac Pro, we'll just be recording at Skyfalls studio (where Skillet records) and so we're pretty much just gonna be using what we've got for now, which is my computer :P
But I've gotten somewhat good at audio editing. I'm no pro, but I can nitpick quite a few things out.

yeah, choosing a studio because 'skillet records there' is a great idea.

Choosing a studio/engineer/producer because they worked with a certain band that you want to get the feel of is pretty common... (though I'd definitely argue that getting the engineer/producers are much more than the studiospace... if that was your point then I agree).

My vocalist's previous band recorded there. He has personal experience with that studio, as well as a few others, and says that Skyfall is the best he's been to yet. Plus they nitpick everything you play, and won't record a final take until everything is perfect. Expensive, yes. Worth it? All the way.
I've heard nothing but great things about Skyfall, and so we're gonna record our EP there.
