My first pet was a turtle named Solomon. I got him when I was 9 years old, and have had him now for 18 years.

18 years is a long time to have a pet., Don't get your kids a turtle, it really limits their living choices when they grow up and try to leave home.... and you really don't want to be stuck having to take care of a turtle... its gross work, and little pay back.

With that said, i do love my turtle. I do not know if he follows me around because He remembers me from when we shared a bedroom together.. remembering my telling him I loved him every night before I turned off my bedside lamp.... or maybe my fingers just look like food. Its hard to say. He is after all, a cold blooded turtle.

We caught some frogs when I was quite young, and kept them as pets for a few months at least. We called em Burt and Ernie. Then we eventually released them.
