For stuff that's pretty out of the ordinary, I'd suggest Showbread's Anorexia (they double released Anorexia and Nervosa and they're considered one project, two albums. Nervosa is definitely the more conventional of the two though), and Starflyer 59's stuff, also check out Neon Horse. The lyrics are kind of mainstream, but the members are all Christians.

This negatively affected my tone in ways that I just can't describe.
Then, on a whim, a few years ago I wandered into a Bath and Body Works store at a local mall and picked up some of their gentle foaming anti-bacterial hand cleansers.
The difference in my guitar's sound is so wickedly improved that I no longer feel the need to buy a new amp or pedals or even strings...EVER!
So, it's my belief that tone is in the soap.
Thank you and goodnight. | |

| I'm not trying to pick a fight. I promise. I have no intention of hijacking this thread, so if anyone wants to discuss anything I say (outside of the topic of the thread) in more detail, do it in PM please. I will not reply in this thread unless the reply has to do with broadening musical tastes.
That said, for me, one of the best ways to broaden your musical tastes is to listen to music in other languages. However, this almost necessitates listening to "secular" music as America is one of very few countries with a large Christian music industry. But, listening to "secular" music is in a sense also broadening your tastes. That music is not about God does not necessitate that it is not true, honorable, just, pure, lovely, or commendable (see Phil. 4:8).
That said, the best band on planet earth is Wir Sind Helden, a female-fronted German pop/rock band. Other good German acts: Christina Stuermer, Juli, Silbermond, Annett Louisan and Klee. For French: Mes Aeiux (Quebec rock band). For Spanish: Julieta Venegas (for music that is undeniably lovely, listen to her spanish/portuguese duet with Marisa Monte; I can think of nothing on earth that better exemplifies "lovely" than Julieta Venegas' voice) and Jesse & Joy. For Chinese: sodagreen and Lonely China Day.
I have also listened to interesting music in Icelandic, Japanese and Russian. For the French and Chinese, I cannot vouch for the content of the lyrics as I can't understand a word of them, but that has never bothered me. Again, you want to broaden your tastes. People have been listening to music for hundreds of years without understanding the words (see opera). If you don't think music could mean anything to you without understanding the words, give it a try. Start with the YouTube link I gave. I seriously cannot think of a more beautiful song.
You could also look into various forms of classical music (which means something different in every part of the world; classical Indian music is truly fascinating) and jazz.

They might win the "most trendy hardcore band name that's not actually a hardcore band" award, as well. |
