Singing from the drum set

Last Friday was interesting. The backup singer was home sick, so I offered to sing backup from the set if we could get a mic to me. The sound guy brought a head-worn mic. Overall, it went well. The only problem was that when I wasn't singing, the drum was coming through the mic in an obvious way.

This was the first time for me to wear a mic on drum set. It made me more conscious about coughing or making side-comments to the wind player next to me as I often might during music worship.

I am looking forward to singing more backup vocals from the set in the future.

Very cool. I've done a little singing from the drums before, but I didn't get a fancy head mic. I just had one on a stand so I always had to look over to the side when I wanted to sing. I've done a little more vocal work from hand percussion and that's generally easier to mic because there's not so much "stuff" in the way.

Did you have trouble playing more complicated rhythms while singing? I've found it can be hard to play syncopations that the vocals don't follow. I've ended up having to play "straighter" rhythms when I'm singing.

I mainly sang during the chorus portions, so it did not hinder the more complicated parts I had to play. I was familiar enough with the songs. It also helped that the songs weren't very complicated in the first place. Or, maybe just not complicated to me.

The issue with wearing a head mic is that it will pick up the drums more than a normal condenser mic on a stand. That's what I'd recommend if you were to continue singing from the kit. That way you can also swing it out of the way on songs that you're not playing and you can just move your head away from the mic when you're not singing so it doesn't pick up your breathing, coughing, or random rhythm noises you might make.
