Actually, just a few seasons ago, they changed the rules, and everyone that signs up with AI is under obligation to the producers of that show. I believe American Idol has the option to release artists, but rarely do so within the first few years following their appearances on the program. They realize they've helped create a demand for these artists, and want to recoup the first (and usually only profitable) album released by these artists.

I don't think there are any voters that change their mind about who they want to win, based on individual nights performances. After it gets down to about 6 performers, I think each fanbase will continue to vote with their hearts and not their ears. I believe Crystal performed great and Lee just so-so, but the voters weren't going to be swayed that late in the game.
