| Really, it's the rumor of being contract-free that gets my interest. Also, I love text only websites. I hate ESPN now that everything has a video. I haven't unmuted my netbook in a week.
Even without 3G, I'd be tempted to save for this rather than buy an iPod touch. |

| Soapbar, this is a product that is literally brand new. Nothing like it has been released before. You smashing it is extremely baseless. When the Kindle first came out a bunch of people started hating on it immediately for no reason other than the fact that they could. My point being, you have no basis on which to smash the device. Be wary, yes, but don't start smashing it for no reason.
I am usually VERY unimpressed with Apple products, and hate the religious intensity with which their fans defend their products. But I am FAR from an Apple hater. This is a very new, very innovative product and if it does take to the market Apple has created a monster of a cash cow. Just like Amazon with the Kindle, this stands to be the market setter for years.
I am curious as to how much this will eat kindle sales. I honestly don't see that they will be in the same market, but I am curious. If I bought one of these I definitely wouldn't use it to read ebooks/newspapers over my kindle, simply because of how easy the kindle is on my eyes. But nonetheless, it's an interesting thought.
$30 a month is a good deal for 3G unlimited data. Just as an aside. |

Now, I might get this over an iPod touch, if I can scrape up some more cash. Being able to do some word processing in a pinch would be nice, for when the computer's down. But I would miss the pocketability (New word, yo) of an MP3 player. I'm not sure.
OOh, but changeable wallpaper is nice. |

Or you could strap it onto your back. |

| Hmm. I was hoping that when this came out the used iPod touch market might get a lot bigger, but they don't ship until March and there isn't any trace of the new iPad on the Apple Canada site.
I haven't looked at this much yet, but I am still skeptical that this will offer any advantage over a traditional laptop. Time will tell I suppose.

| Portability and sleekness are it's primary advantage over a laptop.
It's kind of neat, and it has some potential, but I don't see much need for me to jump on one now. The fact that it is little more than an over-sized iPhone without the phone and camera is a little weird to me. I can do all these things, albeit not as pretty, on my smartphone or laptop.
Also, I have trouble with people placing this against the Kindle. They're totally different products. Yes you can read books on the iPad (horrible name btw), but you're reading it on a backlit screen just like reading it on a laptop. The key to the Kindle isn't really its ability to store lots of books on it (laptops can do that just as easily) it's the ability to read like you're reading a paper book.
That said, I could see this being huge on colleges if they can bring the textbook companies on board. |

| The thing that upsets me the most is that they are trying to tell people how to feel about it. I thought critics and scholars were supposed to give compliments. Not the company itself. "Magical"? Really? |

| Perhaps as this device develops more, and they have released subsequent generations of it it will be more useful.
I was kind of hoping that this would be a device that could perhaps replace my laptop for my mobile computing needs (less crap to pack up for going to school), and would allow me to do more stuff period when Im out and about.
Right now, the iPad as it stands doesnt do much more than my iPod touch (sure, it can do more, but not much more).
I think Ill wait.
I am still excited by this device, but mostly by its potential. It has great potential, but thats not enough to get me to buy it. Yet.
*edit*
As far as college text books go, some of the professors at my school dont allow the use of electronic devices during class. On threat of a grade drop for each violation. There is no way I could use a device like the iPad for college books in those classes.

| To be fair, regarding my last post, Ive only run across one professor like that at HCC, but it seems logical that where there is one there are probably others. I do use my iPod touch in my current class, but the class itself requires the presence of electronic devices, so he doesnt actually have a choice.
Anyways, for classes that I may run into where the professor is not going to allow that kind of thing the iPad just wont be practical. In others it might be.
Also, i dont know if anyone else has wondered about this, but why is the iPad only capable of 64 gigs? My parents iPod classics are 120gig devices. Couldnt they find room in that monstrosity for more storage?
To put it in perspective, my moms iPod has more storage than my laptop by more than double, and its less than a 1/10 the size of my lap top. The iPad is easily 3 times larger (or more) than the largest iPhone model. Maybe Im being petty, but I was kind of hoping the iPad would have some kind of ridiculously huge storage. 64g is fine I suppose, but I want more.
