I'm just 135 lbs. I'd love to beef up a bit. It might make a difference if I use a proper weight set. But, I simply don't want it enough, I don't mind being skinny most of the time. | Then why the post in here? If you are at a healthy weight, and are cool with it........? |

| I don't know, one thing lead to another, haha.
I said I am mostly cool with it, I would still like to gain some muscle in the next few months.
I should really start a simple routine.
Do pushups really beef you up at all? I've heard multiple times that they don't really do too much rather than just pretty well keep your arms in shape (doesn't build you up). True?

Anyway, looks like both ya'll are off to a good start. Earlessdog, if you're still in your teens, or even early 20's your plight is not uncommon. Many guys have a hard time packing muscle on at that age. If your serious about bulking up a little do some research....Muscle and Fitness magazine, Mens Health etc. There's as much good info on how to diet and exercise to gain weight as there is to loose it. |

Action adventure type stuff...mountain climbing, white water rafting? | I am trying to keep a steady pace. I have taken to exercising twice a day, cooking all of my own meals, and I have cut fast foods. The fast food part will be hard. I'll still hit some In-N-Out every now and then, and when I do special things I don't worry as much. Like this weekend when we went to San Francisco I had a great burger and some fries. I think that consistency in diet is a huge thing, but I've found that when I try to not eat anything fun it just makes it worse.
Hiking, backpacking, we might hit up some white water too. One of my friends is a serious hiker. He was doing 10 mile hikes last summer, 3 day trips in the Sierras. I also want to do some mountain biking, and actual running. |

According to the Mayo Clinic a person weighing 160 lbs. will burn ~584 calories per hour while jogging. It's much easier to just not eat those 584 calories.

And, if you do lose a lot of weight by dieting, its really easy to put that weight back on (your body gets used to certain weights and tries to maintain them, thats why Opera gained all her weight back after she lost like 80 lbs. or whatever) and excersising will most certainly help you keep it off.

| I can't say I've ever heard of this. It's true that your metabolic rate will slow with a drastic reduction in caloric intake (like 50%) but your body will adjust to your new weight. It may be true in a psychological sense--that if you commit to an exercise regimen then you're more invested in the whole enterprise and therefore less likely to backslide.

| Probably 90% or more of my weight loss is directly attributed to diet. Like Josh said, diet has a far more profound affect on weight than exercise does. That said, I am exercising. I am currently sore in the triceps, pecs and shoulders because of how thoroughly I destroyed them at the gym yesterday. |
