| I Need Opinions on Impending Exhaust System. Okay, so I just got headers for my 99 Mitsu Eclipse GS, so a matching (2.25") exhaust system is in order. My question: I need a new cat. Should I replace it or delete it. I live in Oregon (not Portland) so we don't have emissions checks. (I want to be legal regardless though, so if you know Oregon laws...). I'm obviously not expecting a big increase of HP with this exhaust, but if viable I might want to delete the cat. Less things to replace in the future. And it opens up the system obviously. Is it worth it? Thoughts??? And if you say yes, how exactly do you delete it?...I mean with the O2 sensors and such.
Thanks. |

| Keep the cat. It's legal, it's already there, and it's functioning. |

| I don't have a cat in my truck. I took it out, and it has way more power. I ran 2" pipe 6' from the manifold, and then a expansion chamber, and then a funnel, then 1.5" pipe. it is not to loud, but has WAY more power then the stock exhaust.
Stock it would have had 2" pipe, a cat, and a muffler.

And how did you measure it?
The butt-dyno is notoriously unreliable....
As a general rule, exhaust systems without other contributing mods = VERY modest power gains. |

| Well...........
There are several hills that i have to go over when I go to town. Before when i went to town, I would have to shift to 4th to get up, and not it will climb in 5th.
Also, it will do about 65 MPH with 215/75R15s and it would not before. The only way to go faster (85) is to put 165/85R14s on it, I drive off road.

| Necked down exhaust is the hottest modification for old Ford trucks, we all know this to be true.
A header on a 420A is better spent money and energy than a kick to the testicles. But only just. |

Thanks everyone for the replies! I'll probably just end up getting a hi flow cat and sticking with that. |

Thanks. | You say you want to stay legal... keep the cats. It is my recollection that it is illegal to remove the emission controls your car was equipped with regardless of where you live.

I'm just getting estimates on how much it'll be right now. My assumption would be that the one from a Dodge would be too big. Because they seem to classify them by # of liters. But I don't know. I just get confused with whether everyone has their own laws or whether everyone has the CARB rules (which suck I've heard if you live in CA), or whether there is a federal law.
Thanks though! |

| What happened to my post?? I posted and said that I took the cat off of my dodge (And the muffler too - Just have a 6" chamber on it and a reducer) And when I took it in it passed inspection. In alaska you don't need a cat, but I don't know about where you live.

| Hmm, well it looks like where I live, I technically need one. True, we never have testing here outside of Portland, OR, but since I want to be legal (what's that all about?) I need one. Oh well. Hopefully I'll find one cheap!
It wouldn't surprise me if you didn't need one in Alaska, what with all of the trucking and off road and winter stuff you guys do! How long is the cat you took off your Dodge? |
