"performing" as a vocalist...

okay.. so this isn't really about singing

I'm on the worship team at church... and I have seen so many people just be FAKE up on the stage... so when I'm on stage singing, I typically just kind of stand there. (lol) so now... I'm being asked to join a band for a coffeeshop thing... and my parents are like "you are too boring to watch"... any tips on how to loosen up a little without being fake?

if this makes any sense...

It makes complete sense b/c I've been there and voice lessons are gonna help ya with that but for now the big thing is don't "do" anything on purpose just worship. Just sing as if you're only singing to God and no one else and then you'll just look natural in whatever you do b/c you're being natural. No one says you have to dance around or even move to much. Just feel the music and don't even think about what you're looking like or what you're doing just worship God . Hope that helps girl!

Well, in a coffee shop, usually you're just kinda background music, so I wouldn't worry about it too much. If people are actually paying attention, making eye contact is always a good start. Lock eyes with somebody for a few seconds, then move to someone else.

A musical theatre tip...

You don't have to be an actor to do this.

Look at each song you're singing. In a song, you're communicating something, a story, an experience, etc. Look at the song in sections and find places to "act" something. You can only act verbs, so find some word that would communicate your feelings. For example:

"Breathe"

"And I, I'm so desparate for you..."

Active Verb: to acknowledge your desparation

Remember, you can't act "to be..." as a verb.

Just be honest in your performance, tell a story, share your heart.

Hope this helps.

Grace and Peace.

Meh, just act naturally. Don't worry about trying to impress anyone, and play and sing as you would at home. I've seen too many people with forced energy onstage.

hey guys, thanks for all the tips. I certainly do not want to be fake... I hate watching people be fake on stage. but today, I just tried to forget about people being there and just sang to God.... and I was much more relaxed and not as "stiff".

Performance

If I could offer a tip...

Worship at home in your room to your favorite worship cd. I mean really worship. Be free. Raise your hands, sing loud, dance, move around the room. As your worship becomes more real, you will feel less uncomfortable expressing yourself on-stage. Your worship on stage will become contagious and others will join you as they observe your freedom and sincerity in your admiration of God.
