Warm ups and warm downs.

What is your favorite? I am kinda new to singing so I don't have one.

Lip bubbles?
Do they work? I hear they do, I hear they don't. Do they? Or don't they?

I have a few friends/colleagues who actually find "lip bubbles" (I've always called them "lip trills") done on some sort of scale to be helpful for their breath support.

I personally get very tense in my jaw and neck if I do any exercises involving lip trills.

I do them all the time. They actually are quite helpful, if you do them right. If you are doing them right, you should not get tense at all in your neck or jaw. I can fairly easily reach a high E (above the tenor high C) doing the lip bubbles if I let it come out easily. The whole point of the exercise is to do it without forcing it.

Okay, so the people saying they don't work are doing them wrong? The people saying they do work are doing them right?

They're an exercise, and like any exercise, if you do it right you'll find it a whole lot more useful than if you do it wrong. Also, you have to remember, not the same thing works for everyone.

Alright. Thanks. So if it don't work for me it does not mean I am doing them wrong? It could just mean there not right for me?

I just can't figure out how doing lip trills can be any more effective than other warm ups. As far as I can tell most people just do them over an octave. Why not just sing an octave? It's the same thing, just less annoying/silly. I'd rather warm up by doing things that help breath support or articulation as well as warm my voice.

I still do lip bubbles if I'm warming up because it's a great breathing excersise. Add your voice and it's also good vocal warm up too. I did it all through the six years I was in choir.

One thing I am seeing if it will work is I am playing a song on guitar then singing the song but with lip bubbles/lip trills. My throat felt loser and It seemed I could breath easier while singing. It also made it easier to hit correct notes too.

Imma do an independent study. I'm gonna get all the singers in my band to do arpeggios and octaves before each practice for the next few weeks. We'll see how it affects all of us.

I have heard people argue about doing them loud or soft so I and the high backup will do them loud and our bass and mid backup singer wil do them softly and then switch. I shall report back when we have reached concensus.
