| I forgot that Asus was actually making laptops now. I've used their motherboards for years. All but a couple of the computers I've built (upwards of 10) had an Asus Mobo. I'm using an M2N-SLI Deluxe in this machine here (about 3 years old). The only other brand's I've used were gigabyte and A-Bit. Both the Gigabyte and the A-Bit motherboards tended to be less capable and flimsy. I know that after my last bout with A-bit, I'll never use them again. The Gigabyte drivers were really unstable as well.
Go Asus.

| Ok. I will upgrade to 7 when I get my laptop up and running again. I was afraid to mess things up by switching, but you all seem so confident I'll give it a try.
Ok. I did see an Asus that I liked on their site so I'll have to look around for prices and all.
If anyone finds any good deals, lemme know.

I know xp gets a lot of praise now, but from someone who was running it since 1 year before the release date, it had bugs. serious issues, mostly in security.

I've used both Vista and XP extensively and in a lot of situations both common and uncommon to the normal person. XP in beta had a lot of issues but really, if you were a responsible user on XP at release, the security issues weren't/aren't a big deal. Vista takes so many options away from the user and makes many things that you could do on XP very hard if not impossible.
7 seems to fix most of that. I haven't used it as much, but I will be making the switch soon because of lack of driver support.

There was a reason why XP was held from business use for so long in favor of win2k. XP for quite some time had haphazard networking issues. It worked so sporadically. The fact that it gets so much love now really makes me laugh as for the first couple years it was out, it was considered okay for a home computer as the "Fischer-Price edition" but other than that, its network capabilities were sorely lacking. Microsoft did deal with this, though there still were issues with protocols, especially those using IPv6 which had to be manually solved long after the fact.
I was working in IT when XP came out, and nobody wanted to budge from 2k. There were good reasons for that.
I had my vista set up where I was able to do all but one thing I wanted and that was a 3rd party driver issue. I used vista for q while. It was a very solid OS, and for the most part, the controls were very similar to xp with some extra features.

| I've never had any problems with Vista, but I never paid enough attention when I had it to see how XP compares.
Still looking for a laptop that has everything I'm looking for. The closest thing I found was a Dell, but I heard some complaints about that model as well. I may have to just wait for some new laptops to come out. And those refurbished macs are still too expensive for me. =/ I'd like to find something before the value of the laptop I have drops too much...

I have found, though, that, in the last few years, having two XP computers and two that were on Vista (we gave one to my brother), and now owning my own Windows 7 computer, my order of preference goes Windows 7, XP, Vista. I don't have huge qualms with Vista, but I just can't get to the point of liking it as much as or more than XP. |

| I haven't. Besides the HP I don't have any thing that fits my needs. I hope something similar comes out soon under a trusted name, or I may have to wait...
There was a Dell that had most of the things I wanted. It was the Studio 17 model. It's a little out of the price range I'd prefer though.
