is this computer any good?

I'm thinking about taking this computer off my moms hands for 200 bucks because she never uses it.
Gateway
1.20 Ghz 32 bit operating system AMD Athlon L110
Windows Vista 2G ram

the bottom gets hot easy though I'm not sure why, the vents are on the bottom is this a problem?

Laptop?
It's not a terrible machine, but I'd upgrade to 7 or install Linux.

Laptops in general (at least in my experience) tend to run hot. As long as you keep it on a surface that will allow it to breathe (as in, not your lap) it will probably be fine.

Will that system handle Windows 7?

Um probably not windows 7.

I might dual boot ubuntu but I need iTunes kinda well not really.

Should I do it? I wanna get rid of this bulky computer into storage and just put the laptop on this stand... much more room.

From my experience so far, 7 is both nicer and lighter than Vista, but it is still Windows (my preference leans towards *nix).

Try it with running Ubuntu as your main OS and dual booting into Vista, if you don't like it upgrade to 7?

You can request a free CD, but it will probably take a month or more to arrive, or you can download/torrent a disc image (Get Ubuntu - Download, request a CD, or buy on CD/DVD | Ubuntu). Burn the disc image to a blank CD and boot onto the CD. Or, if you want to do a clean install of Vista as well, install Ubuntu first, then follow these instructions:
How to dual boot Linux and Windows XP (Linux installed first) -- the step-by-step guide with screenshots
