| I'm not sure what you're saying.
Get a license for your own work? AFAIK, you create your own work.
Get a license to use someone else's work? you contact the creator. |

| I want to be able to copy songs from song books to use in a overhead projecter. I will type them out on the computer, then print them out on the plastic "Paper" for the projector.

You may have to give credit to the original author on the slide, but I think that'd be it. If you wanted to record or re-use for profit, however, you would have to contact the copyright-holder. |

| No, it can still be illegal even if you're not using it to make a profit. If you're making copies to avoid purchasing copies for church members, you're still depriving the originator of compensation to which he's entitled, even though you're not making a profit.
This stuff can be complex, and IANAL. You may want to do some reading at Music Publishers' Association | Copyright Resource Center | The Church Musician and the Copyright Law
and U.S. Copyright Office - Copyright Law: Chapter 1
Generally speaking, you can ask yourself, "Do I want to do this to avoid paying someone money?" If the answer is "yes" you're probably infringing their copyright.
To the original poster's question, "How does one go about getting a copyright license for copying music...?" go here CCLI: What We Offer
to get started.
Be careful and keep squeaky clean on this stuff. The last thing we need is for God's people to be seen publicly stealing, which is what copyright infringment amounts to.

| If you are doing this for church/at a church/something similar you may already be covered by the CCLI, in which case you should contact the church and ask.

If you're doing this for educational purposes or during the course of a worship service, there is quite a bit of freedom offered, but you'll need to read up on your specific application and how the law treats it to be certain. |
