| What are some good resources to study Diabetes? I have a presentation in a few weeks on Diabetes Mellitus that I'm doing with a partner, and, while I have a few books, I need some good online resources (already checked out the official Diabetes website. My teacher won't accept Wikipedia). Does anyone know any good-quality, scientifically creditable websites I could use?
Gracias! |

| Try this. Its a website on diabetes that links you to a whole other list of books/online resources. It's meant for both the public as well as healthcare professionals. I hope this helps. CDM: Resources for People with Diabetes |

Paul, this is a massive topic. Are you going to narrow it down? What kind of presentation is it? How long? Does you audience already have a basic understanding of the disease? |

It's an 8-10 minute presentation, so it obviously can't be really long. Basically, we're going to go over what Diabetes is, symptoms/signs, the different types, treatments available, and life with Diabetes, plus, if there's time, go into some statistics (did you know that 7.8% of Americans have Diabetes?). So we're going to have to pack a lot in there, but I think we can do it. |

| I have a good friend who is a certified diabetic educator. She suggested this as a good site for general "living with diabetes". Any research articles that I could link you to would be pretty wordy for your purposes, I think. |

Do you know of a good peer-reviewed scientific article about Diabetes? I'm not entirely certain there are any set parameters on it, but it does have to pertain to Diabetes, and we have to reference it in our actual presentation. |

| I can find one through our online medical library, I'll take a look in a bit.
Also, I just found this excellent article from the NIH. Great source-cred. |

| Here is a peer review article about the genetic component. You will certainly want to include the hereditary factor in your presentation, so this would probably work. |

I'll e-mail it to my partner and see if he agrees with me. Thank you very much! |

| You are very welcome!
This is amazing to me:
In Hawaii, Native Hawaiians are more than 5.7 times as likely as Whites living in Hawaii to die from diabetes.

US Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Minority Health | Wow. I wonder why? I believe another article I read stated that blacks are 1.8 times more likely than non-hispanic whites to get Diabetes. It also stated that there are 5.7 million (or so) people who have Diabetes, yet are undiagnosed. Frankly, that's a little alarming. |
