Rock/Rap music.

I checked if there were other threads. I did not find them.

Anyway, Is it a sin to listen to Rock/Rap music? I don't see how it is a joyful noise unto the lord. You may not think it is joyful, but your not the person I want to please with the music. I found no list or command in the bible telling me other wise.

If it is just the instruments:

Guitar/Bass: Isaiah 38:20
Drums (kinda): 1 Chronicles 13:8
Singer: Exodus 15:21

There is a basic rock band, all okay by the lord.

All the other instruments: 1 Chronicles 23:5

What do you think? If it is a sin could you show me in the bible?

I smell a quick death for this thread.

Since no particular form of modern music is mentioned in the Bible, you have a difficult time trying to prove that any of them are bad.

Logic would dictate that a musical style can't be evil.

It's not in the Bible.

neither is classical, jazz or folk.

It's in Jude 2:12 - "Thou shalt not listen to the music of the devil called 'Rock'n'Roll' and move thine hips in evil ways".

I don't know about you, but my hips don't bear false witness against their neighbor.

Maybe we should move this thread to CPF instead, just to see what happens...

The note patterns found in rock music tend to encourage demonic activity; the driving -- sometimes irregular -- beat of rap even more so. The satanic thundering bass of rap shows the arrogance of people trying to demonstrate they are the Most High God in might and power. The "overdrive" noise distortion are just that: noise and distortion from real music. This "overdrive" in rock makes people tense and simply increases stress and reduces joy. Clearly this is not what God wills for our lives.

In all seriousness.
1) Nothing in the Bible indicates that a genre of music is wrong.
2) However, the brother who has weaker faith may find it damages his faith.

In the Bible there is one grey area that is addressed specifically, and Paul calls it a disputable matter. I am giving a sermon on it in 4.5 hrs. PM me a email address and I can send you my manuscript if you want.

Romans 14: 1Accept him whose faith is weak, without passing judgment on disputable matters. 2One man's faith allows him to eat everything, but another man, whose faith is weak, eats only vegetables. 3The man who eats everything must not look down on him who does not, and the man who does not eat everything must not condemn the man who does, for God has accepted him. 4Who are you to judge someone else's servant? To his own master he stands or falls. And he will stand, for the Lord is able to make him stand.

If you are not able to listen to rock or rap, then DON'T! However, there is a command for you as the weaker brother, not to judge your brothers who are able.

I myself hate rap, but love me some thrash metal, and punk and hardcore. However, if you look up passages about meat sacrificed to idols, believers are not to hurt their brother with this. Thus if I knew you were opposed and played rock to try to get you to lighten up, I would be in the wrong, even though the activity of listening to rock is fine.

Jesus taught that nothing you put into your body makes you unclean, but that which proceeds from a man. I think that applies to ears as well as the mouth. And nothing in the Bible says every noise in your life has to be joyful. The lament Psalms certainly are not, nor are the imprecatory or curse Psalms.
