Hello everyone. I play a lot of blues - my biggest influences are the original country bluesmen, who played a lot of Spirituals as well, and very much had there feet planted in a church life and a , let us say, more rowdy life. Son House, Fred McDowell, Big Jack Johnson... these were interesting and complex men who's repetoires were full of contradictions.

Reverend Davis for sure, and maybe the most prominent of that vein, Blind Willie Johnson. Dense with sincerity. I'm more of a slide player so I'm not as familiar with RGD songs. There is a video on YouTube featuring a blues musician in Chicago, 1960's that talks about all this. I'll think of his name - he's obscure - and look it up and post the link here if I can figure out how.

Yeah, I love Willie Johnson's voice. Just the pure feeling in it... Very moving...

Hmmmm.... Chicago slide player in the 60s.... I'm trying to think who it could be.... Maybe Hound Dog Taylor?

No, not famous like Hound Dog. Johnny ?????? It'll come, I can't think of it. He didn't record, as far as I know. But, the film shows him playing a slide style of a spiritual "When I'm Gone". It's terrific.

It's Johnie Lewis. I'll try to post a link but I doubt it will work.

YouTube - Johnie Lewis - I'm Gone

If it doesn't, just go to YouTube and search: Johnie Lewis When I'm Gone
