Icky CPU fan

I'm trying to fix up an ooooold computer and so far everything looks okay, but the CPU fan is extremely noisy at this point. Is there any way of fixing such a problem--by disassembling it? I don't want to have to order another, and, being a factory HP computer, finding a replacement might be a little tricky, too.

You can get a fan at a radio shack, for cheap too. Most fans are usually standard sizes.

EDIT: I read this as case fan, and not CPU fan. The CPU fan is an intel/amd thing, but I don't know much about it.

I definitely had not thought of Radio Shack. I'll have to check that out today. Unfortunately, looking at Radio Shack's website, it looks like all their fans or heatsinks are web exclusives... I'm going to check the store out anyway since it's is really just "around the corner" and beats trying the Best Buy or Newegg.

As an aside, the fan's power supply cord is run through the heatsink's clip thing, and it's going to be a pain to have to undo that clip just to get the cord out.

Okay I just got the heatsink off and the socket clearly states it is a socket 462, which is apparently just the same as socket A.

Well... "worst" case scenario I should simply be able to buy a new heatsink, ALTHOUGH I do have an older socket a-type and I might just use that instead.

Okay well my Radio Shack now seems to be a private franchise store that stocks Radio Shack stuff... or something. But they ordered a replacement fan for me; unfortunately I waited too long to tell them not to order it after they quoted me $17.99 for the price, and that I would just use my old heatsink and fan... and they won't let me return it for a refund if the whole thing ends up not working anyway... well, I don't think they'll get my business again, haha. This fan better be worth it.

But anyway, I've got a quick question. Since I took off the heatsink I want to reapply thermal paste, which I have purchased. There's a bit of residue of the old stuff left in the middle of the CPU, as well as on the bottom of the heatsink. Would it be wise to remove this residue, and, if so, how?

And, while I'm at it, since I never was too clear on where to apply the paste... does it just need to be on the middle raised portion of the heatsink, or can/should it go on the other little raised areas? I'm attaching a picture of the CPU to look at.
