iPod alternatives

Okay so my iPod's headphone jack has bit the dust. To get a new one through Apple would be $129, I could also get it fixed through a third party for around $50. However my iPod has suffered some wear and tear and who knows how much longer the little guy will last, so I would prefer to just get a new mp3 player. Does anybody use an mp3 player other than an iPod or Zune (won't work with my mac) and suggest it? My only preference is that it come with as much space as an iPod Classic, but for less money.

unfortunately, the only thing I know of that has that capacity is Zune or iPod. What exactly is the storage capacity on yours?

if you want over ~20-30gb you are stuck with zune/ipod.

For what it's worth, the zune interface is a lot better, and while itunes may work on OSX, it's heinous on windows, so there's a big plus there (except if you're using a Mac already )

Dang, what a bummer. Well it looks like I'll be listening to my ghetto one headphone ipod till it breaks or I find $250 lying around.

Thanks for the help

Amazon.com: Philips GoGear 32 GB MP3 video player (Black): Electronics

My sister has a macbook and uses that, but she had to download this software to get it work with Mac OSX.

Mine did that two or three times... personally I would just buy a new iPod with an extended warranty. It'll be more expensive now, but it'll be better (and maybe even cheaper) in the long run.

you can pick up a Zune 30 for around 100 bucks if you shop around or have the patience to watch Woot every day. I have five of them, they really are remarkable.

It won't work with my mac though

I'll look into the Philips Go Gear that luvinjesus suggested. Do you know if I would need to convert all my music back into mp3 or something else equally annoying to use the software for it?

You can go to downloads .com and look for a music converter if you really decide not to get an iPod. However, most of them have been known to corrupt or otherwise ruin music and video files.

Which is why any smart person backs their music up.

I have them all on my computer then they are backed up on a external hard drive (1TB).

I also have the cd's for some of the albums.

Actually, I use Tunebite. I purchased it for $30, but I rarely have problems with it. So no, not all converters are unreliable.

I meant free converters... any decent converter (like tunebite) is going to cost money which defeats the purpose (I mean isn't the whole point of this thread is to find the cheapest option?) plus they can still mess up your files.

I still think iPods are the best for value and reliability and Zunes are a close(ish) second.
