Maybe a little bit of both. I hate the dichotomy between academics and good living, and I try, (and I am sure fail miserably) to bridge that chasm. Professional theologians are just academic theologians with a paycheck imo. And many of the self-professed academic theologians are not very academic or much into studying God for that matter.
Basically,
Jeremiah 9: 23 This is what the LORD says:
"Let not the wise man boast of his wisdom
or the strong man boast of his strength
or the rich man boast of his riches,
24 but let him who boasts boast about this:
that he understands and knows me,
that I am the LORD, who exercises kindness,
justice and righteousness on earth,
for in these I delight,"
declares the LORD.
I just had to finish translating this. (That is NIV, mine is horribly grammatically awkward and coarse)
What stuck out to me are the parallels with Job. Can we understand and KNOW God?
How much of our rigor is spent on knowing his lovingkindness, justice and righteousness, and how much of our intellectual pursuits are merely cause to boast in our understanding and wisdom?
