Testing out of high school

Right now I'm trying to get my GED and start working full time as a GED is equivalent to a Diploma and I'm sick of wasting my time at school getting a low GPA and letter grades. My moms "okay" with it because she trusts me and wants me to make some of my decisions but my dad is freaking out.

Right now I technically cant because of my Dad but I won't be going to school anymore so I really need some prayer.. This is the same thing diploma and GED and yet no one understands and I have a job to start with and work my way up.

What ever

If you don't mind me asking, do you have a plan for the next couple years?

Find something that I want to do and go to Community college for it. Work until then for that, a car and save up some cash.

Rather then staying in high school bulsh*tting my way through enduing up witha 1.8 GPA and doing the exact same thing, except 2years later.

What about culinary training? Or are you thinking more along the lines of electrician or perhaps a lineman?

anything to be honest I just don't know what, but I do know that I'm not wasting my time in school just to think about it, when I could be working, getting money to start my life and get a car and pay for school to get a job I like.

Am I being an idiot or do I make sense? If I am being an idiot, can some one enlighten me how? I'm not taking a lazy approach, I'm trying to get ahead here.

I don't think you're being an idiot. Some people have an idea of what they want to do from early on. Others (plenty of others) have no idea even while attending college. So, I don't think there's necessarily any problem with just getting out there and working. But the thing is that you want to do it in such a way that you have options. Like if you want to go to college in the future or a vocational school or whatever. In most cases you're not really going to climb the pay scale if you don't have some kind of higher education or trade skill.

As far as being lazy goes only you would know. You say you can't maintain a C average. Does that mean you're working your ass off and that's the best you can do or is there something else to it?

I'm sorry to hear about your home situation. I would give your father a little time to cool off, and go and talk to him again. Put yourself in his place, I'm sure he's thinking about what's best for you, I wouldn't be happy either if one of my sons had told me they were dropping out of H.S. You're not being an idiot by wanting to get on with your life. As someone who graduated from High school a year early with a H.S. diploma I can tell you there are still some down sides to doing it. I wanted to rush into adult life but when I got there I realized I could have been better prepared. As you state you aren't sure about what you want to do that extra time in H.S. helps. Also a GED and a High school diploma are not exactly the same. Many colleges will not accept applicants with GEDs (but you are probably OK with a community college) but check with the college admissions people first. If you're having problems in high school are you sure you won't have the same issues at a community college? Also if two people are going for the same job and one has a H.S. diploma and the other a GED preference may be given by the prospective employer to the one with the diploma. A few years back prior to the war in Iraq some branches of the military (i.e. the Navy, and Air Force) had so many applicants they weren't taking people with GEDs. Getting the diploma shows that you stuck it out and put in the effort. Have you considered transferring to a H.S. with a trade program, many have programs where you have half day traditional classes, and learn a trade (such as electrical, auto Mechanics, etc.) in the other half day. A new school environment with the opportunity to learn a skill you can use might be the fresh start you need. Talk to your schools guidance counsellor about different options, they are there to help!! If you have the knowledge, and ability to get a GED then why are you not getting better grades? You seem to have a negative attitude regarding school, and aren't putting in the effort. I say this because you post is well written and you seem to have the intelligence necessary. It will take a lot of effort to get a GED are you sure you will follow through with that plan, once you start working and earning money? You need to ask yourself a lot of the tough questions, prior to making a life changing decision like dropping out of High school.

Have you talked to a counselor about Running Start yet? Because community college free is a lot better than having to pay for it. You should really go to SPSCC anytime and see if you can place a COMPASS test. It's pretty short, and it'll tell you how prepared you are for the comm. coll. classes.
