my bass

I am wondering if I could use a single coil rail pickup like a Wilde L45 in my Fender musicmaster. It seems a fairly neutral, flat pickup, and the musicmaster pickup is really noisy. (I am keeping the original wiring and such intact, just swapping out pickguards.

Or is there a single coil sized aftermarket pickup, (preferably noiseless) that would be a better fit.

I think that Seymore Duncan makes something that would fit. I bet that one of their original ('51-'56) style P-bass pickups would drop right into the musicmaster.

Also, if you're going from one single coil to another single coil, I wouldn't expect the noise to drop. Singles are inherently noisy. You may want to look for a stacked humbucker.

an l45 is a dual blade single coil sized humbucker.

Also, this single coil is exceptionally noisy.

Are you wanting something with the same sound, just no noise, or just anything noiseless that will fit?

looking at that one as a possibility.

What I am looking for...

A low noise bass sound that will be usable with some distortion. I did like the overall tone of the current single coil, but it is pretty dang noisy, even clean, and seems to be getting a little worse recently.

The l45 is something I have lying around, and seems to be neutral, I was kind of curious if something like that would even work. but I am getting a new pickguard, and wiring up a new pickup and electronics. I am going to set the original aside for if I ever sell it, but most likely I am going to try the l-45 first as it costs me nothing to try.

Are there any other options out there?

Have you considered having your bass rewired or even just shielded? I bet that would cut down on the noise by quite a bit if you haven't already.

problem is, its "vintage"

It has shielding stock, and is wired correctly. I think it actually is the pickup as it is very temperamental.

I am leaving the stock electronics stock, for if I ever sell it. (It was 20 for a new pickguard and everything mounts to the pickguard)

So I am putting in new pots, shielding, a new pickguard, and going to be playing with pickups. I guess I am going to throw some guitar, rail pickups in there to try as I have several models on hand. It costs nothing to try. If that fails, I guess my option is the SD single coil.
