Authentication of collections

I'm considering buying my wife some old coins or Native American artifacts as a Christmas gift. How worried should I be about getting ripped off? Is it common for people to try and sell replicas as originals? Or to misrepresent the time period or region from where an artifact was recovered. Is it any riskier to buy on line than in person? After all if I were holding an arrow head in my hand I would still have no idea if it were a fake. I would like to buy a small collection to put in a glass case for display. Any thoughts on this would be appreciated. Thanks.
