| Best Halloween Movies The time of the season is close upon us, and I'd like to get some recommendations for creepy movies.
I'm not so much interested in vague horror movies, like ones mentioned just because they are zombies or vampires or whatever. I am more interested in films that have an over-all feeling of creepiness/fright/tension.
Some examples that come to mind: Suspiria
Midnight Meat Train
The Brood
and so forth.
Any ideas?

| Well, the original Wicker Man should be watched on every holiday.
This might not be what you're looking for, but Sleepaway Camp was delightful. Worth watching for the ending.
A side note, the ending totally ruined Midnight Meat Train for me.

| The Blair Witch Project is my recommendation. Once the three characters started hiking in the woods, the tension/creepiness level slowly escalated until the end. I still consider it to be the best horror film I've ever seen.
I'd also recommend two Neil Marshall films as well: Dog Soldiers(though it does have a bit of a comedic element to it) and The Descent.

| I'll second The Descent. Also, Backwoods is a good film. Filled with dark tension.

| I know one remarkable film, an animated cartoon. The house of the monster. When it you look, not probably to tear off an eye.

| Man, I totally forgot about the Wicker Man. I have a really old VHS copy of it that is the R rated version. Everyone tells me I need the unrated to get the full effect, though.

| Halloween (not the P.O.S. Rob Zombie one either) A Nightmare On Elm Street
Poltergeist Night Of The Living Dead (original)
I also prefer the classic Universal monster movies as well. You can't go wrong with Dracula, Frankenstein or The Mummy. |

| There's always The Nightmare Before Christmas.
If I wasn't helping out with a church event, I'd be tempted to go with a Hitchcock marathon. |

| I can't believe I didn't mention the original Halloween. Definitely my favorite slasher film.

| I was watching an older VH1 special about slasher films and it put Hellraiser into that category. That was odd to me.
The original Night of the Living Dead is possibly the most unnerving movie I've ever watched. It is nihilistic beyond all measure.

| I don't think I'm even able to articulate the reasons, but for me, zombie films don't really have a place in halloween. My sister and I have been going through all the "fright" related movies in our collection over the past few days and the zombie movies just aren't doing it when I'd normally be loving them. I guess there's just something about the season that makes me seek out something different in terror.
That said, Night Of The Living Dead is amazing.

| I try and tell this to people and nobody seems to get it. I am glad someone else believes this.
