Car doesn't want to go into 5th gear

Either way, explain to your brother that in no way is that car fast, nor does it brake well, nor does it handle well, nor is it in any shade "sporty"

It's a tool for being economical from point A to point B, and shouldn't be abused as if it were something else. The problem with fast cars is that they're much more expensive in broken parts and maintenance and it's partly due to how they're driven

Tell him to stop being an idiot, or to go buy a civic and put a grapefruit cannon on it and call it a day.

indeed. the crappy part is that I have his old Boneville now and wehn he buys a new car in a few years I'll probably get the aveo... with my luck he'll have killed it by then. the way he drives it it is only getting like 25mpg (I can get 22-24 in the Bonny)

True... however, would you put your name on something that didn't meet the quality standards of your own products? So there are two ways to look at it...either Chevy is knowingly selling a product that doesn't meet it's own standards of quality (generally frowned upon as a bad business practice)... OR the Aveo meets the quality standards of a Chevy product and is thus another indication of what GM considers acceptable.

it sounds like it's being hideously abused though, I've seen quite a number of aveos with no problems after a considerable number of miles put on them-

Realistically econoboxes are not built to take a ton of abuse because they're designed to be cheap. Honda is a strange exception because they build wonderful gearboxes for their commutermobiles.

I agree entirely...Econoboxes are disposable cars that can't handle sustained abuse. I was merely pointing out how I feel that the "It isn't a Chevy" argument is flawed.

Hey now, Chevy is not the only car company that has syncro problems, most manufacturers have this happen from time to time, it's the nature of the beast.

Also, in my experience it takes years for a syncro to start showing problems as a result of abuse. Unless you're trying to force it into gear with all your might, which is just plain stupid. Oh, and on a FWD car I'd expect the linkage to fail first, if that's the case.

Also, Chevy did not quit making manual transmissions. I don't know where you got that from...

They did not make them when we went up last week to get a new truck. dealer said they quit makingthem in 2001.

yeah I think so... although I think my friend was able to special order a stick in his truck.

In a Colorado, maybe. I'm pretty sure none of the Big Three offer stick shifts on their full size models. (F150, Silverado, Ram, etc)

It was a sporty Colorado... and this was about 2 years ago.
