I honestly don't want him to go back to writing silly songs. I want him to go back to writing witty songs.

I'm in the middle of my first full listen of the album tonight. Thus far, I am liking it.

For me, I guess I just matured along with Thiessen/RK, and thus I only listen to their last three in full now. Faking My Own Suicide and Crayons... are enough for me, apparently.

When you call anything with harsh vocals "screamo", it makes as much sense as calling anything with distorted guitar "heavy metal".

Like I think akaukal is trying to say, the problem isn't the maturity, it's that like every song is the same topic.

Look at Five Score.
9 out of 14 songs are directly about relationships. One is 10 seconds long, and one is just an a cappella intro. Essentially there are 3 songs on the album not directly about relationships with girls.

Yeah, that's what I'm talking about.

Writing less witty songs and more songs about your girlfriend/ex-girlfriend is not a step into maturity. I would say it's actually a step backwards and that Thiessen's writing has become more 15 year old, emo kid, like.

Personally I think they have matured a lot musically and lyrically regardless of the subject they are singing about.

Musically, I agree. This is easily my favorite RK album musically.

I have only really listened to Relient K in their last 2 albums. I have heard a few songs from "mmhhmm", but that's about it. So I'm not really sure what you guys are talking about when you say funny songs.

Fend,

Check out their first three albums Relient K, The Anatomy of the Tongue and Cheek and Two Lefts Don't Make a Right but Three Do. Mainly those first two. Cheesy humor and pop-culture references run rampant.

Agreed. Musically, they've never sounded better.
