I think the owner should have the gold, not the person who trespassed and dug up private land. If I owned the land I would probably share the gold with him maybe 50/50. Maybe I could get a bigger share if I could hang trespassing charges over his head. But it's not cool to go wandering on other people's land digging for gold.

Seems reasonable, he had permission to search, and while the gold rightfully belongs to the farmer, sharing the money seems like the nice thing to do since if he hadn't found it, you wouldn't have even half of it

It certainly is reasonable but it seems when money is involved all niceties and reason gets thrown out the window, in more cases than not.
