Friend has issue with his computer.

My friend was upgrading the RAM in his computer, First he bought 256 megs and installed those, the computer worked fine, then installed 2x512 sticks, tried to turn it on, and heard the fans just fine, then it started to smell like melted plastic, and nothing happens on the screen. What could've caused this? did he dislodge something? is his computer screwed?

He shoved a DDR2 stick of RAM in a DDR Slot
