I'm just gonna put this out there........

This is a great "fun" challenge, but in my job, where I do this all day for service slideshows that show at the end of the week and on Wednesdays.... these slides would not pass the "visibility" test. Think about it this way......

You have a couple of factors. 1) a projector that shoots light onto a screen = drastic change in color, very little visibility without high color contrast, very large margin around all sides of the screen where graphic info just disappears.... 2) a very large congregation, which is usually the type of congregation that uses large slideshows = very large sanctuary = slides get less and less visible towards the back of the sanctuary.

In my mind, the challenge is not how to make it interesting and designed creatively, but how to do that WITHIN THE LIMITATIONS. It's so easy to design for print where you can put subtle pieces in place and make use of a lot of different subtle and overlapping objects..... but in slide design, you have to be EXTREMELY creative in using very large, contrastive text in a very small and constricted space with visibility limitations, AND be creative at the same time.

I know none of that was expressed or put into the details of this challenge, but perhaps for a future challenge like this one, it could be included that this is part of the challenge. Making it readable for a person on a computer where the screen is 18 inches from their face is WAY different than making it readable for the person in the back row who probably doesn't want to read it or pay attention to it anyway. How are YOU going to take their attention captive with your slide?

I can't help but thinking... if this bit of info was posted at the beginning of the challenge, it would have been helpful. Coming at the end? It reads like "Man, you guys really suck." I'm sure that's not how you meant it, but it's how it came across. At least to me.

It would've been helpful to have this at the beginning of the of the contest, but it didn't seem as though she was be snotty to me. I think she was just trying to be helpful.

Critique is a part of getting better.

I thought Sarah's note was meant to be helpful.

That said, I've been out of internet for a couple weeks, so don't expect the voting until this weekend... so if there are any more entries, go ahead and enter, too.

I realize that. And I did say, I'm sure she meant to be helpful.

I was not in control of what information was given at the beginning of the contest, and I have been very non-existent on CGR for awhile. Sorry. I wish it had been given at the beginning too.

And no, I was not saying you suck - but like Jon said, critique is essential for getting better.

Had the "visibility" test been a part of the rules in the beginning I probably would have followed that. I realize what you mean by the slides can be hard to see on church projectors especially with the lights and all other factors in a church as well as the size of the place. I used to do music slides for an old church. I figured these would only be looked at on a computer screen so I bypassed that factor of any visibility issues.

She couldn't exactly see the results at the beginning of the contest. I know she didn't mean it that way. She saw a bit of an issue, and brought it up. *shrug*

I underestimate my laziness in resizing images... perhaps all future competitions will be strictly in sizes of 500px or less. I apologize for the hold up, but this tends to be something I forget to finish up.
