What's your favorite jazz song(s)?

Right now I'm obsessed with "Autumn Leaves" (sung at a speed between Cannonball Adderly and Frank Sinatra.) Other faves are "Lullaby of Birdland" (by Ella),"Is You Is Or Is You Ain't My Baby" (Reneé Olmstead) aaaand "Night In Tunisia", performed by Dizzy himself...

What are you all digging?

Nature Boy
Fly Me to the Moon (I know, I know, but Frank is just so great!)

read more books! listen to more classical, jazz and world music! play more other stringed instruments!

I like Autumn Leaves too, it has nice changes. I like Satin Doll, In A Sentimental Mood and Solitude by Ellington. I like almost anything Jerome Kern has written, All The Things You Are, The Song Is You, etc. I like Here's That Rain Day by Jimmy Van Heusen. I like Donna Lee, Chi Chi and Scrapple From The Apple by Parker. I like Giant Steps, Naima and Central Park West by Coltrane.

Just Friends and stuff by Gershwin too, Summertime. There are so many great standards. It's too bad there are no modern day composers writing songs with lyrics like they did in the '30s, '40s, '50s. You know all those great show tunes that became classic jazz standards.

With the exception of Just The Way You Are by Billy Joel and a handful of Stevie Wonder tunes, maybe Midnight At The Oasis written by some Berklee guy, I forget his name...no one in the past four decades has written anything worthwhile in the genre of popular vocal tunes, that you would want to play an instrumental version of or put jazz changes on it and perform it.

"Spartacus Love Theme" from Bill Evans' Conversations With Myself. Breathtakingly beautiful.

Also been on a huge Headhunters-era Herbie Hancock kick.

If you are referring to light as a feather, then I fully agree. I can listen to that thing for hours. And I guess I have to, since the songs are quite long.

I don't have a lot of jazz...maybe a half dozen CDs. I have two of a trumpet player, Chris Botti. He's pretty good. I have one with me entitled December and is a Christmas CD. I listened to it the other day and it made me home sick.
