Does this movie take place before the the curse of the black pearl or after the trilogy? | After, I believe. The third movie ended with Jack fiddling with the decoder thingamabob looking for the fountain of youth.

Remember at the end of At World's End, where Jack and Barbossa both head off after the Fountain of Youth, Barbossa with the ship and Jack with the important section of the map? This film will take place after that.

| Saw it this afternoon. Definitely the best "Pirates" movie since the first.
Johnny was fantastic as Jack Sparrow, and considering the fact that Jack was the lead character in this film, his character was given a little more development that before. No one could ever play the character of Jack better than Johnny Depp. Geoffrey Rush once again was solid as Barbossa as usual and he and Johnny once again played off each other very well. Ian McShane was great as Blackbeard, but I think he could've been a little more menacing. He could've easily been like the Darth Vader (original trilogy, of course) of the Pirates movies, but I think he came up a little short. Penelope Cruz was strong in her role and had great chemistry with Johnny in her scenes with him.
Also, there was a love story subplot involving a young missionary and a mermaid. Before you groan and complain about it, I felt this story was more compelling than Will and Elizabeth's story was. Neither of the characters were as annoying as Will and Elizabeth were and both, I felt, were portrayed well by the actors that played them. Really liked the way Sam Claflin portrayed the character of the missionary in particular.
In short, I felt Rob Marshall injected a healthy dose of new life into the franchise and I'm very curious to see where the franchise goes from here.

| I <3 Ian McShane. Blackbeard felt very similar to his character in Kings... which is fine by me since he was great in that series as well.
All around good movie. I agree with DKelly, I'm interested to see where the series goes from here. |

| Going to see it in a few days. I am very excited about it since I love the franchise. Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow is just brilliant. |

| I went to a midnight showing.
I thought it was a horribly bland film. It wasn't awful. The story made more sense than the last two. It didn't have the weirdness of the last two, but they played things completely safe. The last one was completely wacky, but they were completely wacky because they had an over the top idea which didn't work out. This time their ambition seemed to be, "Let's make another Pirates movie but as weird as the last one."
...and when you're to your fourth pirate film, sequences start to seem familiar. The freshness naturally starts to fade without new ideas which push things forward (or a mind blowing script).
The part which really ruined things for me is that the film has a static lead and no compelling character development. Jack doesn't grow or change. He's inherently a disconnected character. Therefore, besides entertaining us, his actions don't stir an emotion in the audience. Therefore we're left to the side characters to carry the emotion of the film. The first film effectively did this with Will and Elizabeth. We cared about Will proving himself. We cared about the love story. We wanted them to win and way Jack to do the right thing. This film we're left with Penelop Cruz and her Dad...and she's making bad decisions. So we don't care about her daddy issues. The climax lacked any emotional punch because we didn't care about either character.
Likewise, in the first three films, we didn't know which side Jack was on because he was one of may lead characters. You're waiting the entire film to figure out what he will eventually do. This film he carries the entire film. He has to be the good guy. Therefore, the plot loses it's intrigue. |

| I enjoyed it for what it was. Hours of mindless entertainment.
Penelope Cruz's character was completely and utterly unecessary. I mean the plot would've had to been changed slightly, but nevertheless, the whole Blackbear/Angelica storyline was stupid.
The missionary/mermaid story was the thing that really caught my attention. From pretty much the first scene where he speaks, I was rooting for his character and watched every scene that involved him in intensely because I wanted him so badly to survive. So yeah, that subplot actually worked wonders for me. It was the best part of the entire film for me.
Jack is funny as ever, no real complaints there, and I love everytime Johnny Depp and Geoffrey Rush work together. Barbossa and Sparrow are awesome as ever in this film.
I liked the came of the King and that scene made me lol.
In general, the plot was pretty stupid, but the subplot was redeeming, and the acting was still very good.
Overall, it's slightly better than 2 and 3, mainly because it doesn't have Orlando Bloom in it sucking it up, but none of the films have ever or will ever come close to the genius that was the first film.
Regardless, I'll still continue to watch them as long as Johnny Depp is in them. |

| I had a great time watching this movie. It was fun and entertaining. My only complaint is that I thought, going into it, that there were going to be actual zombies. Instead we got... I don't know exactly, but not the zombies I was expecting.
Daniel and I were talking afterwards about the themes. We both appreciated that they didn't bother to play with the idea of "is Jack good or bad?" We both felt that was addressed adequately in the first two movies (neither of us has seen the third). Instead, the theme was more "you'll get what's coming to you" in terms of good and evil. I appreciate that as a theme.

| The whole missionary subplot was the most annoying feature of this movie. I am always skeptical of two people falling in love with each other based off one or two interactions, and this causes their whole relationship to be superficial. Also it looked like they slashed his throat, 10 min later hes up again to save the light of his life. Then he gets stabbed again, but does it even hurt him? Not really apparently as he has tons of strength to walk hours back to the mermaid location. But whatever....
Jack and Barbosa are the best part of this movie, and I would probably declare this to be my most favorite franchise movie series. I always enjoy watching these, and I do like the writing (despite it not being incredible, its still enjoyable).
