My neighbors on the right side, we want nothing to do with them. The ones on the right side have this amazing little girl, and her husband always asks if we want our lawn mowed. The "neighbor" across the street from me always comes and helps me when I'm working on my car. He's done so much for me!

I've always had cool neighbors, apparently. I can't remember my first neighbors, but my best friend does. (she's three years older than me, so obviously her memory of my early days is better than my memory of my early days.) she says they were cool.

my current roommates started out as my across-the-street neighbors, about 13 years ago. we bought some ice cream the other day and were talking about our favorites. my favorite in general is any combination of mint and chocolate, but the best ice cream I've ever had is some that my roommates' mom made when we were kids. we had this giant nectarine tree in our front yard, and every year it yielded more than we could ever eat. plus, I come from a very hospitable culture, so it was normal for my family to bag up nectarines and deliver them to all our neighbors. I took a bag to my now-roommates' house and their mom kept insisting they wouldn't be able to eat them all before they went bad. so...she came up with the brilliant idea of nectarine ice cream. she made vanilla ice cream with nectarine chunks mixed in, and to this day it is the best ice cream I have ever had. naturally, my roommates don't remember this at all. their parents also hosted plenty of sleepovers and parties, so I guess in a sense we practically lived together as kids, too.

we have some lifelong family friends who were our next-door neighbors in that same house. we met them probably 15+ years ago, and their dad and my dad are like brothers. we weren't too shattered about leaving them when we moved across town 9 years ago, because they were set to move a few months after us into a house just a couple of blocks away from ours. it's not the same as living next door, but we definitely still see them frequently, which is rather a big accomplishment as the dad in that family has been working in iraq for the past several years. he calls us from his site every couple of weeks, though, and we always manage to see their family when he's home for a week or two.

the neighbors around my parents' current house are great as well. my family doctor actually lives on the next street over. once, when I thought I was dying or something because of a vaccination gone wrong, my doctor showed up at our house to see what was going on. my mom has driven by his house on her way to or from work to get her TB tests checked so that she doesn't have to make an appointment, and he just writes her a note while standing in his front yard.

most of the rest of our neighbors have children whom I've babysat at least once. those whose children I haven't babysat are either new to the neighborhood or have adult children. we also have another family friend who lives across the street from us, and she always pops in for tea and a chat, and never fails to bring us pastries. (we could do without the pastries, but I think our lives would be empty without her chats!)

I think I could just ramble on and on about my neighbors forever, but I'll stop here. the reason I know my neighbors so well, by the way, is that we have block parties twice a year, which gives us a chance to catch up. I am missing the christmas block party this year since I don't live with my parents anymore, so I am sure my parents will receive a ton of questions about where I am and what I am doing. that's just how it goes.

I live on the corner of two dead end streets and only have one neighbor at the moment. There are no houses across from me yet. So my one neighbor is pretty cool. I find myself standing out in the street talking to him quite often. He is an easy guy to talk to and we seem to find that extra 15 minutes or so every day to talk about grass, fertilizer, dang kids driving their loud trucks through the mud at the end of our street, ect. He always seems to take interest in my building projects and what I am doing to the house. But at the same time he doesn't cross over the line into that nosey neighbor category.

All the people on my street are Chaldean... 3 of them own multiple marble mines in Iraq and two of them were on the Iraq soccer team during the rule of Saddam Hussein (they met the whole family) and had to flee for their own safety. They are all very kind and if you talk to them they always invite you over for dinner with them... sadly we don't really know any of them too well.

We never really know our neighbors well.

I only know my neighbours as
the surfer
the new guy 1 (I'm not even sure if it's a guy or a girl!)
the meditator
the new guy 2 (again, not sure on the gender...)
and the guy who steals gas.

Even though I don't know them, they've never bothered me, and never complained about me, so I guess that makes them cool, hey?

You were sleeping when I arrived.
I stood by your bed
and watched the sheets rise gently.
I knew what slant of light
would make you turn over.
It was then I felt
the highways slide out of my hands.
I remembered the old men
in the west side cafe,
dealing dominoes like magical charms.
It was then I knew,
like a woman looking backward,
I could not leave you,
or find anyone I loved more.

My next door neighbor is 87 years old. You might be thinking "oh, she's old and cranky." Wrong. This lady still mows her own lawn (even though I've offered countless times to do it for her for free), works 20-30 hours a week, keeps her home and yard beautifully manicured, and has my mom and I over for coffee/cookies 2-3 times a week. And she bakes the best zucchini bread I've ever had. She's one of the sweetest people I've ever met, but has a wicked sense of humor as well. She's awesome.

The neighbor on our other side, on the other hand, isn't really that good. Actually, seeing as how the house has been up for rent countless times, we've had a string of bad neighbors there. However, down the street, we have a couple more awesome neighbors who have lived in the neighborhood for as long as we have (my parents have lived in the house since 1973). The neighborhood, like the rest of Flint, is declining, but luckily we still have enough good neighbors for it to not get as bad as other areas.

Our closest neighbors manage a christmas tree farm on their property.

That's pretty cool.

It's also rather convenient around this time of year
