How do you redeem the 500 points if you paid for it???

k... what day was this done on? Messages you receive "stay" on that day so you have to go back to see them.

Yes, but Firefox pays for advertising. I've seen a few Opera advertisements, but not many. Firefox is also open source so that means most of the dirty work is done by individuals rather than having to pay a staff (though I'm not sure how Opera exists).
