The numbers for Thigpen and Cassel were quite similar last year, and Cassel had a much better surrounding cast than Thigpen had in KC. On top of that Cassel doens't have Tony Gonzales this season, and that also impacts the running game, in that the defense doens't have to consider the threat at TE.
Cassel came pretty cheap draft-pick wise, but financially, I doubt he was worth 60+ million |

| I just have one question:
How the HELL did Cincy beat Pittsburgh!?!?
Broncos are 3-0 and playing Dallas this week
The Chargers are 2-1 and playing the Steelers

The Chargers are 2-1 and playing the Steelers | Cincy beat Pittsburgh because last year was an aberration for what is actually a talented football team. Carson Palmer is obviously a good quarterback. He was taken as the first overall pick for a reason, and has been to two pro bowls. Whatever your opinion of Chad Ochocinco, he has the talent to be an outstanding wide receiver. Cedric Benson was the fourth overall pick a few years ago and clearly has potential, and it looks like that potential is finally coming to fruition. Couple that with a talented young defense, and the Bengals are just not as bad a team as we are used to them being.
It's easy to say that the Broncos haven't really played anyone yet, so their 3-0 mark is meaningless. And that may well be the case. However, consider this: their defense is ranked number one in points allowed. Their defense is ranked number one in yards allowed. Their defense is ranked 7th in rushing yards allowed, and is giving up 3.3 yards a carry. Their defense is ranked 2nd in passing yards allowed. Their defense is tied for third in interceptions, and is tied for first in sacks. The only touchdown they've allowed was to Cincy, with under a minute remaining in the game. (As noted above, Cincy has talented pieces on offense and went on to score 31 against Green Bay and 23 against Pittsburgh - holding them scoreless for over 59 minutes is no small feat.)
With all the changes the Broncos have made offensively, their offensive line is intact, and is arguably one of the top three lines in the league. While they have not been impressive offensively, Buckhalter is running the ball like a madman, and Moreno and is showing plenty of talent, especially considering that we still have never seen him at 100%. They are returning two of the best receivers in the league from last year. And while Orton has been far from spectacular, he is still getting used to a complicated offense. Remember Cassel's first few games in the system last season? Bad. Once he got out there and played a few weeks? He now makes more money than Tom Brady. Even with a mediocre to poor quarterback, this offense has enough talent to still be respectable, even if they don't put up the kind of eye-popping yardage they did last season.
During the offseason, I thought the Broncos would start 3-0 because of their weak schedule, only to finish 4-12. But if they beat the Raiders in Denver, and beat the Chiefs twice, which they have at least shown themselves to be capable of, that is 6 wins right there. Last year the division was won with 8 wins, and as talented as the Chargers are always supposed to be, Norv Turner is just not a good coach, and the Chargers seem destined to underachieve as long as he is at the helm. (Who fires their coach after a 14-2 season anyways?) Nine wins could quite feasibly win the division this year. Could the Broncos win just three of their other ten games? A win over the Redskins seems possible, that would put them at 7 wins. After that, their schedule is pretty tough. But it's not unthinkable that an average team, as the Broncos appear to be so far, could win two out of nine games against above average teams, win a weak division, and make the playoffs. The Cardinals showed last year that come January, anything can happen, no matter how your regular season went, and were 2 minutes away from winning the Super Bowl. A better defense and they could have stopped that last drive by the Steelers. And as I've noted above...the Broncos have a better defense. I'm just sayin'.
That being said...they haven't really played anyone yet and their 3-0 record is meaningless. I'm sticking with my 4-12 prediction until Mc☺☺☺☺☺☺bag proves me wrong. |
