Playing Metallica songs

If I can almost play One and most of All Nightmare Long, what should I move onto next?

I guess it depends on what kind of Metallica fan you are... What's your favorite album?
I always thought their pre-black album stuff was more fun and challenging to play. Anything off ...And Justice For All is good way to go. Try To Live is To Die.
I always thought they're instrumental songs were the most fun to play. The one I mentioned above, Orion and Call of Cthulu are all good challenges

I know part of Battery and all of Master of Puppets and Enter Sandman.

Out of those I think I'd suggest Master of Puppets. Enter Sandman is a good song, but you get all the rockband players getting you to play it over and over and over again, or at least I did. I'm quite sick of it now.

Of course, all three of those are like the most cliche metallica songs you can learn...

Nothing Else Matters. Everybody ever should know that song.

Enter Sandman is good and all, but it's just not Nothing Else Matters good. There's a whole other level of good there.

I like My Friend of Misery and Seek and Destroy too... good classic stuff.

My favourite album would probably be Master Of Puppets, Black or Death Magnetic.
Challenging...hmm...Hit the Lights?
On the topic of instrumentals, I can play most of Suicide and Redemption, not including solos. Should I try and learn the rest of that too?

Master Of Puppets is a great song as far as the music goes, but tremolo picking at 216BPM is extremely fast for me. One was just as fast during the solo; it's the hammer-ons and pull-offs that make it so much easier.

Replying to all the posts has reminded me of some more songs I can play...

Indeed.
My Friend Of Misery has a cool bass riff too.

If you are looking for challenging in the area of melody, I'd advise ...and justice for all.
A song that just sounds amazing though, is End of the Line off their new album.

Sorry to bump; it's my thread though.

No Leaf Clover? Fade To Black? Sad But True?
What about some other bands? Pantera? Iron Maiden? A7X?

I'm not an excessively fast guitarist; I can only comfortably tremolo-pick 16ths at around 160-190BPM, if that helps.

Fade to Black, Orion, And Justice for All, or the Call of the Ktulu. They're all more diverse Metallica songs.

Learn some Megadeath. They were much more technical. High Speed Dirt is a good one to learn.

What have you been working on the last couple months?

Is that picked 16th notes coordinated with your fret hand, or just picking a single string/note? You certainly don't need to be any faster than that to play any Metallica songs I've come across...

Or learn some Megadeth!

Rightio. So if I make up a list of what I can play and a list of similar bands I like, would that help too?

So...pre-Black album Metallica, Megadeth, Dream Theater...wait, how would it broaden my theory?

1. I've been learning Frantic and Fade To Black mostly.
2. Ask far as picking different strings consistently goes (e.g. Fade To Black, Shortest Straw), I'm not very fast. I can play fast riffs like That Was Just Your Life, Battery, Am I Evil?...

picking some music that is more technically challenging will broaden your general musical skillset. though there are some exceptions, most Megadeth and Metallica songs are done in straight 4/4 time signatures. Dream Theater strays from the 4/4 time signatures on a regular basis. you still learn the chops, the blazing scales, the technique, the chunka chunka goodness of Megadeth and Metallica. but it adds enough musical theory to stretch you even further. I'm not talking Meshuggah-like signature insanity (you know it's true!). there are enough variations that make you start counting things in your head and thinking through what you're playing.

just giving you ideas and suggestions, as I play through Megadeth, Metallica, AND Dream Theater (among other things) to learn technique and theory.

Under a Glass Moon (off Images and Words), Endless Sacrifice (off Train of Thought), and A Nightmare to Remember (off Black Clouds and Silver Linings) are pretty good songs to tinker with. take a listen to any of those and see if you're a closet prog metal junkie... JOIN THE DARK SIDE
