| Teen to sail around the world solo Dutch delay 13-year-old sailor's worldwide trip - Yahoo! News
This is great news if she gets to go, it is proof that teens can do more then adults give them credit for.
I hope she gets to do it and finishes.
It is meseed up, that they have to check her mental state, but I understand why.
I also bet this is going to be a hot topic very soon.
And if she makes it, well just think what will happening.

| Am I the only one who thinks that this is a terrible idea?
I dunno...... It just seems to fall kind of under the category of 'dumb things parents shouldn't let their children do.'
"Mom? Can I play with dad's handgun?"
"Mom? Can I sail around the world?"
Meh.... I dunno.... |

| I think the first option actually might be safer than the later...

| For sure.
Things like this reek of a Jessica Dubroff sort of scenario.... Someone tries to be the youngest to fly across the country (or sail around the world) and then three people end up dead. Not a good activity. |

| The whole "13yr-old girl traveling the world to places she's never been around people whose cultures she's never experienced... Alone..." thing is what bothers me most. That's too young. But what do I know... |

Apparently you think you know that just because she is 13 it Is a bad idea but we wont say anything in till she dose it agreed? Don’t say she can’t do this. After all how many times has the world been proving wrong? Quote:

Okay I will love it if she dose do it because you are saying she can’t do it.
And she might not But you know what? She might just proof you wrong.
And you get mad when others generalize. Quote:

Meh.... I dunno.... | It is just like how it was with women before, they cant do it because they are women.
they cant do it because they are to young meh... I don’t know
Again I am not saying she will or wont I am saying don’t say she wont or shouldn’t just because of her age how many times before has a recorded been broking by some one to “young”

After all how many times has the world been proving wrong? | Thirteen now and thirteen when thirteen meant adult are completely different. For instance, when thirteen was considered an adult, kids were forced to grow and mature more before that age, making them far more suited for the world than modern-day thirteen year-olds might be.
Additionally, so a thirteen year-old may be able to sail. I'm not questioning that. What I am questioning is how the heck that kid will be able to react to unforeseen circumstances (pirates, storms, drunken sailors, whatever). A thirteen year-old girl is easy prey. She lacks life experience (more than likely; heck, maybe I'm wrong) and most likely lacks the wisdom to know what to do in those situations simply due to age.
Sure, it'll be cool if she does it, but I don't honestly think doing it solo just to break a record is the most intelligent thing for her to do. If she can, more power to her. |

If she can, more power to her. | Not just that, but she lacks the physical strength and stamina to deal with a somali pirate much less a ship, or your average dockhand.
I would not think its a good idea for an adult, but seriously, the idea that one thinks its a good idea for anybody, much less a young female child to go around the world solo is a good idea.
I am a fairly decent size guy and I think I would be a freaking idiot to try this.

Age well the youngest (enter thing here) had the same thing said they where to young they cant do it there is to much danger
And if you say let her then good and also a girl might be easy prey but I assume they will have taken the right steps as they would with any person doing something this dangers

I am a fairly decent size guy and I think I would be a freaking idiot to try this. | Well first off this boat is not as big as many second as I said I assume they will have something to protect her
And last but not least don’t say she cant do it in till she gives up
And I am not saying that is is not insane
But then aging humanity is insanity

After all how many times has the world been proving wrong? | I'm not saying she can't do this. I'm saying she shouldn't do this. It is a bad idea for a 13 year old girl to try to sail around the world. It is a bad idea for more reasons than I have time to type here. If you honestly think it's a good idea, I question your reasoning ability.
It's simple risk management, Kentl. I don't think it's a bad idea, only because she's young. Sailing around the world alone is a bad idea for anyone. It's only a worse idea because of how young she is. Quote:

And you get mad when others generalize. | Again. I'm not saying she can't.... I'm saying she shouldn't, and the adults in her life should be smart enough to know that. Quote:

Again I am not saying she will or wont I am saying don’t say she wont or shouldn’t just because of her age how many times before has a recorded been broking by some one to “young” | Simply because a few young people have broken records before is no rationale for this catastrophe of risk assessment. Alright. Let's look at the possible outcomes:
1) She does it. Everyone thinks it's cool for the 20-minute spot she gets on the news. After that, they're back to watching the 'A-Team.'
2) She doesn't do it. She gets part of the way around, stops, and goes back home.
3) She doesn't do it. She dies.
4) She doesn't get there. She lands in a hostile part of the world that she hadn't yet heard about in her 6th grade geography class, is sold into the sex trade, and is never heard from again.
After reviewing the options, if you think this is honestly a good idea, you're insane. |
