Here's the problem Shawn: you are taking a bunch of hypotheticals and looking at them positively. You say, "what if" this and "what if" that, and all anyone else is saying is that you just can't assume these things are true...

I mean, what if she's really Chuck Norris and will roundhouse kick every Somali Pirate on the face of the earth during her circumnavigation of the earth?

How do you know the law won't let her unless something is planned? Source? Citation?

Yet another un-cited claim doesn't count as a citation for your other un-cited claim.

No. You made the assertion. The burden of proof is on you.

I seriously doubt this....
Yeah, I am sure some kids would get on boats and sail around, but for nine months at a time by themselves? I very much doubt it, other wise I don't thiink what this girl is doing would be such a big deal.

Just because you read a happy fun time book about Victorian era kids sailing the high oceans does not make it true.

Also, there most likely was NOT a Never Never Land.... Sorry.

Well I just read the article...

here are a few very good points I believe Kentl overlooked when he read this.

13 is a very delicate age... you are developing mentaly and physically and your hormones are going nuts. The trip will take up to 2 YEARS. Isolation has been known to make people have phycological problems... add that to arguably the most difficult couple of years of your life and you risk major disaster.

Also... what of her health? her education???

All of those problems aside, as I said before... the ocean is dangerous... especially in a 25ft sailboat. I honestly would call letting her go alone a very serious case of child neglect. She would be safer being left to fend herself for 2 years out on the street yet THAT is illegal. I'm not saying I like the GOV controlling everything, but this is one case where I don't think I would mind.

I just saw this..... the original link for this thread is gone.... so I'm not sure if it's the same person.

In any case, the trip ended better than it could have, by a HUGE margin.

I remember reading about that.

Her parents, aparently, want to let her go again. Its like "We've nearly lost our daughter once doing this, lets try it again!"... kind of.

The parents or the daughter. And what exactly shows a lack of wisdom and intelligence?

for what it's worth on the two way radios ben, in most open ocean instances you'd be working with SSB (single sideband) which can go massive distances and is kind of the defacto standard for bluewater boats. That and sat-phones have gotten pretty commonplace.

For what it's worth, a dismasting is a pretty devastating event, but honestly it's something that happens whether you're 13 or 50. Honestly if you're snapped in, unless you hole the boat, a sailboat will float (and upright at that) in pretty much anything, regardless of if you have a mast or not They're pretty awesome about that.

For what it's worth, I think it's pretty unwise to put someone that young and that green into that kind of environment. The southern ocean is NOT a place to take lightly. Nothing we get in the northern oceans even comes close to the kind of windspeed & wave action that can be seen down there. There's a reason they call those latitudes the 'roaring 40's' 'furious 50's' and 'screamin' 60's'

I'm pretty sure that due to fatalities per capita, the vendee globe is the most dangerous form of racing ever attempted by mankind- It's essentially a non-stop around the world by yourself race in the extreme southern ocean in very large, very fast boats. To send a kid down there does smack of bad parenting.

I've sailed in some pretty gnarly soup, and I would be very, very hesitant to even consider a trip like that right now.
