As I understand, you normally need to convert a diesel engine for use with used vegetable oil and that it won't burn properly without the conversion. That said, I have no experience with this and I'm just going by hearsay.

From what I've seen, it depends on each individual engine. My friend's dad has a 1997 Ford F350, and runs probably 85% vegetable oil with no engine modifications whatsoever. His previous diesel, a 1995 (?) Chevy Silverado, needed some minor mods before it could run it.

you can either do a conversion or mix the oil with the right chemicals to make actual fuel. There are quite a good number of writeups online on how to do it.

The only modifications necessary to run straight WVO in most any Diesel are a separate tank for the WVO so it can be heated to prevent gelling. Post '07 Diesels with Piezo Injectors usually cant run anything more than a B5 (5% mixture) due to their sensitivity to viscosity changes. Ford's new In-house Power Stroke can run up to a B20 mixture. Diesels are Compression ignition engines, most having CR's of 17:1 (Cummins) or up to around 20:1 (VW/Audi TDI). therefore there is no sparkplug to foul. Fatty oils, Veggie oils and Bio-Diesel actually have more lubricity than ULSD and will prolong injector and Injection pump life. Especially older Diesels equipped with Bosch Rotary pumps. As the pumps are cooled and lubed by fuel instead of engine oil. Check out www.4btswaps.com, Diesel Bombers - Diesel Forum - High Performance, Cummins, Duramax, Powerstroke, TDI, Fred's TDI Page. TDIClub.com. VW TDI Enthusiast Community for a huge weath of info reguarding Diesels.
