| Starting Golfing I want to try golfing for fun, but I have no idea how to begin, like what equipments I'll need. But first, I want to know which golf club would be best to start out with for practice. One of my friends said that an iron 7 club will do, but I was wondering what you guys think. Should I consider getting an iron 7 club? If not, what would you recommend?
Since I'm only getting a club to practice with, I'm trying to refrain from buying an expensive club. My friend will let me borrow his brother's set whenever we go out to the ranges for fun, and I'm not sure if I'll stick to playing golf for a long time. So I'm looking for a decent-enough club. |

With both of these clubs, the ball is positioned near the center of your stance (the 5-iron is dead center and the 7 is a little to the rear of center) giving them a good position to begin learning from.
If you only had one club starting out, I would pick the 5-iron, though if you could get three, I would get a driver, 5-iron and a pitching wedge (or maybe a 9-iron). This would give you clubs to practice hitting at the front (driver), center (5-iron) and rear (PW/9) of your stance.
In terms of what club (quality wise) to get, I really couldn't tell you. I've always felt like Dunlop and Wilson made decent beginner clubs, but I have no idea what's on the market these days. |

| I agree with thesteve on beginning club selections. Though I would add getting a 5 or a 3 wood as well. They're good practice and not quite as big as a driver to start with. As for a beginning set, you can usually get full sets (clubs and bag) for under 200 dollars at places like walmart, k-mart, and sometimes even shop-ko. I have a set of Dunlops and they work well. Bought at K-mart 2 years ago for around $150.
If you choose to go the route of buying individual clubs to begin with, I reccommend a driver, 3 OR 5 wood, 7 OR 8 OR 5 iron, pitching wedge, and a putter. If you can only get a few clubs deffinately a putter (needed greatly), an iron, and a driver or wood... Usually you can get clubs cheap from a pawnshop somewhere as well.
Good luck with golf! It's frustrating at times but very fun! It's a highly mental game

Honestly, on the little par-3 course in my town, I could and do sometimes play the whole thing with a 3-iron, 7-iron, pitching wedge, and putter. I barely ever touch my eight, six, or four irons on any course. You don't need much to start golfing.
If you can only pick one, my choice would be the 7-iron.
