My driver's ed segment 2 teacher...

thinks he is a lot smarter than he is.

here are some examples of what he has said.

"Rear wheel drive vehicles are an unnecessary danger. They don't improve performance and they add the risk of oversteer and other dangers. I think all cars should be FWD and have ESP technology."

"Stickshifts are another over hyped hazard... the truth is that they don't give you better control of the vehicle, acceleration, or better mileage and they distract you from the "driving task". "

"Cars are not supposed to be a symbol of what you are... they are also not "toys". Cars are not for having fun they are for going from point A to point B as safely, cheaply, and comfortably as possible."

"I absolutely HATE sports cars. They are a waste of money."

one kid said he would be driving a an Iroc- Z Camaro...

"Sell it. Those are horrible cars... they are almost as bad as Mustangs"

"Corvettes are quite possibly one of the worst cars ever made. They aren't really that fast for how many HP they have, they don't handle well and they are not comfortable to sit in. You could make me take the new ZR1 even if it was free"

He asked what cars I drive ( I responded the Chevy Aveo, and the Chevy HHR) then he asked if I was going to be buying a car ( I responded that I was going to buy my bro's 88 Bonneville for $200)

" HAHAHAHAH Why in god's good name would you do that?!?!?!? That thing gets like 20ft. to the Gallon" (it gets 18 mpg if you really floor it and drive poorly) so I said "it only has 85k miles on it, and it gets 20 mpg." and he said "so what??? That car is ugly (well it isn't great but it isn't as ugly as some cars) and you are going to spend all of your money keeping it running" (which really isn't true at all) so I said " I would still take it over your car" (he has an 85 Pontiac grand prix with like 250k miles on it ... it's a student car) well that shut him up for a while, but he was rather rude after that.

Did anyone else ever have idiotic driving teachers?

Oh... one more quote

"The are two types of motorcyclists... those who have been in a fatal crash and those who are about to."

he also went of on dune buggys/ sandrails and atvs, but I cant remember exactly what he said.

That sounds about right to me. Nothing against cyclists, but that moron driving the SUV like an idiot... ...he can kill you with his idiocy easy enough. It is a simple matter of mass. That and I have had 3 idiots bump my mirrors in the last few months running between cars. 2 did so while I was running in excess of 60.

Its really, really stupid to insult people who grade you. Just saying.

Half of what he said was stupid. But you know what, its a wiser man who ignores the fool's folly than the one who thinks as a teenager they are going to win an argument with a driving instructor.

Oh it's certainly unwinnable, from the position that scared2mosh is in, it doesn't mean his position is wrong though.

Not all motorcyclists will be in fatal crashes. If we want to use the statistics to get rid of bikes because they're OMG dangerous, we'll be kicking everyone out of cars and onto commercial aircraft at the same time

I thought lane splitting wasn't legal over 45mph in California though? I know there's some sort of speed disparity rule where you're only supposed to go 'x' over traffic. I never really learned it because the other 49 states don't allow splitting so it doesn't really matter to me.

this is true... they are extremely dangerous, but not everyone who rides one dies.

I avoided arguing with him (because I knew there was no way I would win), but I lost any respect I had for him when he mocked me in front of the entire class. He was acting way more childish than his students tbh.

I disagree. I think being in an unwinnable position means you should avoid doing battle there.

I never said I was for government intervention. Natural selection would be my preference on that one. (Realize I am joking, and given different areas of the country it is not consistent, but in some neighborhoods I am almost afraid to drive my small SUV for fear of being run over by the idiot in the Escalade)

But in all honesty, motorcycles are ridiculously dangerous around here.

Yes... And the speed limit is 65 on most freeways and jaywalking is illegal. Legality does not always match reality. Because cycling is not safe around here, I think we have a greater draw to it by those who like to be extra reckless, and are thus, not wreckless.

You know, it's threads like this that make me wish I would have written down some things my instructor said. The worst part was he just didn't care and got caught for smoking marijuana in the parking lot a couple of years later. If I would have listened to everything I was taught by my instructors in various classes I would be a wreck right now.

Did he tell you to just follow the flow of traffic and don't worry about the speed limit? That doesn't work on the police... at least it didn't work for one of my friends.

It was basically 3 2hr long sessions of watching videos meant to scare you into driving correctly.

I wasn't suggesting that he do battle, in fact I thought I was suggesting that he shouldn't, even though he is correct. Sometimes you just have to let idiots think they're right.

I'm all for nature taking its course rather than government, but at the same time, you can kill people without impunity with your car (unless you're drunk, naturally). In Washington for instance, if you mow down a motorcyclist (or bicyclist) because you weren't paying attention due to one of a hundred reasons, it's a $124 ticket for "failure to yield the right of way".

I would simply charge people with what they really did, manslaughter or negligent homicide, since that's what it is. I don't care if you eat, put on makeup, talk to your passengers, change CD's, or even talk on the phone, as long as your primary task & focus is still driving. It's when you endanger me that I care, and realistically, it doesn't matter whether it's a phone or junior in the back seat acting up. If you can't make driving your number one priority, park it until you can.

So are cars for the most part, and realistically you could say that WRT motorcycles in any large population center. Interestingly though, I get so amped on rage-o-hol driving in downtown seattle in a 4 wheeled vehicle, for my sanity I refuse to drive downtown unless it's on a bike. Because I can avoid the idiots & tourists (sometimes they're the same thing) frustration level goes down, blood pressure drops etc

meh, anecdotes? c'mon now bill I've put ~20% of my total driving miles over the last 5 years on motorcycles and i'm still wreckless Just because you're an adrenaline freak doesn't mean you're incompetent.

Without impunity? I think you mean, with impunity.

I agree. But a simple fact is... smaller vehicle, more likely to get hit. I can't ride my bike around here. I almost got mowed down by a crazy driver on the sidewalk a couple times and just hung up my bike helmet till I move.

Agreed. However... when I am in areas known to be particularly hideous at driving, I drive my larger, brighter car. Why? Because I have been hit and run in the last month and hit in accidents or while parked at least 5 times while down here. (okay, so one was an accident, and I was ruled 0% at fault.) But getting hit at redlights, has happened as a hit and run twice, and twice my car has been hit while parked. I realistically think it is unsafe HERE, at this point in time. The more metal you have between you and the idiot, the better.

Cars are a good deal safer than motorcycles. Lets take my accident where I was driving for example. I got hit by a woman doing roughly 55 in a raised truck in a 30MPH zone while making a legal u turn. (Did I mention she was going the wrong side of the street and it was head on?) The car slid, it removed a bumper, a fender and sent me across roughly two lanes of traffic. That would have been fatal or close to on a cycle. Like I said, its not the cyclists I am worried about for the most part.

More metal to protect you.

I'm talking not about being an adrenaline junky, but someone who takes stupid risks. I know a lot of bikers don't ride here. Its just unsafe. I can see how coming from an area where cyclists do end up dead by escalade routinely, the sentiment that they will die is kind of reasonable.

I would wager the solutions would be rather unpleasant.

Some of those things he said are pretty funny.....

I'm wondering what sort of vehicle he actually likes. So FWD, with electronic driving nannies, automatic, with good gas mileage. So that leaves..... everything but the good cars.

In any case. You know who's worse than driving instructors? Yep, you guessed it: Flight instructors.
