I'm unsure if I agree. On the one hand, yeah, it'd be nice... But, on the other, hasn't our system worked pretty well so far (idiotic drivers aside)?

Huh. Seems to have worked for me and most people I know. *Shrug* Granted, I had a bit better education than "Go drive here" before learning signs. Yay VA.

I would say probably 50% of licensed drivers couldn't actually maintain controll of their vehicle in an emergency. The only accident I ever was in the driver (my cousin was driving and I was riding shotgun) honked the horn for about 5 seconds before attempting to make evasive manuevers...

We were going about 30mph on a icy sidestreet and we were at the top of a hill and someone at the bottom of the hill backed out... I noticed the danger before her and warned her so she honked the horn for several seconds THEN she used the brakes (but no evasive steering). However she pumped the brakes rather than taking advatage of the ABS in the car... she did about $1,200 in damage to my parents van and she refused to call the police so they could determine who was at fault because then it would go on her record. Sadly my parents had to pay to have it fixed.

The problem is that that isn't an isolated incedent... there are a lot of people who would do the same exact thing.

Quite. It's not just the 'idiotic drivers.' It's the fact that 98% of people who manage to pass their first license test.... have such a pathetic knowledge base regarding cars and their operation that it's just insane.

If it were up to me, people would learn to drive at the track....

Not arguing that I wouldn't mind doing that. I'd love to push a car to its limits and learn how to handle it.

Same here...

I know for a fact I'm a way better driver than my friend who took segment one with me. Our families went on a group vacation w/ them and some other friends to Chicago and me and my friend both drove our respective cars so we could get lot's of driving time in and I could tell by watching him (and so could my family) that he could barely keep the car at a steady speed on the freeway. I'm still kinda worried about my road test though
