There are statistics to support anything you want to believe. Right now, so much is speculation, you really have to go with your gut as to what's best for the environment (impact of battery disposal vs. emissions of gasoline/diesel-powered engines) if that's important to you.
There are ways to dispose of batteries, or so i've heard. Plus, I'd be willing to bet that with developments in the future that this will eventually become a non-issue.

Oregon does.... You can't pump your own gas there.

Edit... I'm just kind of wondering when this environmental/efficiency train is going to hit small airplanes. And what will become of them when it does.... Because as of now, almost all of them are still running on leaded gas.

My concern isnt environmental so much as it is safety.

I work with battery powered electric lifts at work. And the care and handling of the batteries, including the charging process require alot of safety, and knowledge of what you can and cant do to a battery when charging it, aswell as keeping it maintained.

And what safety features will these cars include to prevent hot charging? Thats probably the numberone safety issue with any battery powered machine, is hot charging. It leads to all kinds of safety issues, primarilly surrounding acid spills caused by hot charging.
Recharging a battery isnt like refueling a gas tank. If your gas tank is more than half full and you put more gas in it, you just fill your tank up more. If a battery is over 50% charge, and you attempt to charge it, you risk acid spills, battery rupture, you will shorten the life of your battery, toxic fumes can be emmitted from the battery because of improper charging and maintenance habits.

Yes, and safety is the reason that Oregon and New Jersey give for not allowing consumers to pump their own gas as well. I'm not saying that the DMV shouldn't require specialized training, I'm just saying that if they do it would be inconsistent.

Toyota puts a phone number on every battery to call at the time of replacement. They pay a $200 recovery fee for each battery to help ensure that it will be properly recycled by taking it to a dealership. To date, Toyota claims to have never had to replace a battery on a *Prius due to wear and tear.

The aptera is supposed to get 200 MPG and come with a decent size fuel tank. I have really been interested in it as far as hybrids go. I think it has the right idea, because it has sufficient range.
