Inkscape

For you fledgling Graphic Designers, here's Inkscape, basically free, open source Illustrator. I'd think with Inkscape and GIMP, you could work in a workflow for free similarly to Illustrator and Photoshop. Anyone use(d) this?
Inkscape. Draw Freely.

Now, can you find a good alternative to InDesign?

Seriously.

Even Publisher, not open source, sucks wombats.

I've used Inkscape a little. Well, experimented with it more than anything. My designs are crap probably because I'm not sure how to use it to it's full potential. It's definitely powerful though and is capable of creating good designs, especially since it's free.

Have you used Scribus? I only used it a little bit a few years ago, before I got InDesign, but it did what I need to do. . .

I'm pretty much not a fan of open-source stuff, when Adobe is so widely used and so, so, so powerful....... and I also like that I have formal training in those programs, and that there is so much info out there on how to use them and what they can do.

I.e. PsdTuts

I used GIMP for awhile, and there were just some really basic but essential things it was missing..... and then some other things it wasn't missing, but weren't that intuitive to figure out, probably for fear of completely copying Adobe..... and I had a hard time figuring out how to get some things to work, due to that fact.

I've used inkscape quite a bit. Like any graphics program, the amount of work you put into it = how easily you can get good results

I don't know, I'm partial to Adobe's products, as expensive as they may be.

Yeah, I'm an in Illustrator addict, but Inkscape is pretty full-featured for a freebie.

I'm sure it would be perfect for a hobbyist or someone starting out freelancing and whatnot. That said, I probably won't be upgrading my CS3 any time soon. Maybe when there's CS6 out.

There's nothing much I noticed between CS3 and CS4 as far as Illustrator is concerned. Photoshop got a couple cool new features, but overall, the two are pretty similar features-wise. CS4 Photoshop works a lot faster than CS3, IMO, though.

That's what I've heard. My biggest pet peeve is that I can't open CS4 documents up. If anyone sends me one I have to ask them to back save it for me.
