Ten Thousand Charms

What is the reference to "ten thousand charms" in the hymn Come Ye Sinners.

I assume this should be in the Theology forum. I am not too sure. I also did a search of the boards and found nothing on it that has already been posted.

I am actually not familiar with that hymn.
Can you post the lyrics?

Come Ye Sinners is a really beautiful song but I don't think it is what most people would consider a traditional hymn. According to the sheet music I have for the song it was written by Joseph Hart and copyrighted in 2001. The music is by Robbie Seay and appears on the Robbie Seay Band "Better Days" album. Here are the words:

Come ye sinners, poor and needy
Weak and wounded, sick and sore
Jesus ready, stands to save you
Full of pity, love and power

Come ye thirsty, come and welcome
God's free bounty glorified
True belief in true repentance
And every grace that brings you nigh

I will arise and go to Jesus
He will embrace me in His arms
And in the arms of my de Savior,
Oh, there are ten thousand charms

Come ye weary, heavy laden
Lost and ruined by the fall
If you tarry until you're better
You will never come at all

----

I've always assumed the "ten thousand charms" bit was just something the writer came up with rather than some Biblical reference, but I don't really know.

I'm not familiar with this song, but I found a discussion on this question, here.

Some hymns are just bad theology. I sang one that talked about putting Jesus in my pocket to take him anywhere I go. There may not be scriptural reference for it and may have been just brewed out of tradition or culture at some place in time.

Or it could just be poetry? (not "putting Jesus in my pocket," but "ten thousand charms")

Get Anathallo's rendition of the song. The mp3 is free.
drop.io anathallohymns

It, along with the other songs off the album, is available on this site:

Meanwhile, I don't remember that verse in the song. ... and I don't know what to think of it.

It is a later chorus, in a version that usually limits the verses to four lines instead of their original six.

Depending on your tradition / denomination, you'll the know the tune by this version or the other one.

You must be looking at a copyright for a particular version or arrangement. The hymn is very old. Joseph Hart died in 1768. Undoubtedly this old hymn has been performed in a variety of styles over the years.

To the OP - I believe the line is merely (?) poetry. Beautiful poetry, in my opinion. It's simply a way of expressing amazement or a sense of awe, like the line from Amazing Grace, "When we've been there ten thousand years..."

I wonder if the same anonymous author added both verses ("ten thousand charms" to "Come Ye Sinners" and "ten thousand years" to "Amazing Grace") to their respective hymns. Neither is original to the hymn, and neither is attributable. The hymns were written (and probably amended) around the same time-frame, too.

Ah, this I did not realize. I agree with you though that it just sees like poetry.

Nate - Hmmmmm. Interesting thought. Doubt it could be known, but it's an entertaining speculation. Any idea when both hymns might have appeared in the same hymnal for the first time? That might be a clue.

You have a problem with that? New, Portable Jesus! Fit's nicely in your pocket. If you order now, we'll throw in a second Pocket Jesus. Just pay shipping and handling.

I think Landover Baptist was running that as a special last month...
