Country slide players to listen to:

Robert Johnson
Blind Willie McTell
Blind Willie Johnson
Muddy Waters (his recordings in the 1950s)
I went to a little bit of a workshop Rory Block did at Merlefest and she did go over a little bit of slide stuff. I'm not a big fan of her, but she's got the style down....

I appreciate the ratings and opinions on Instruction . I do have a couple of instructional sets on different topics and felt quite ripped off by one of them. Once burned twice shy

I was told once to avoid tunings that put extra tension on the next - Is there any chance open E can damage my guitar?

Probably not. You have to be tuning all your strings quite a bit tighter to do any real damage to most modern guitars. Today's guitars can handle more tension than your average alternate tuning will put on it. Not to say your setup won't be affected at all, there will be most likely slight changes in action if you leave the strings like that for very long periods of time. But all in all, not a big deal. Open E is nothing.
