Graphic Design

I propose that the Graphics forum be renamed the Graphic Design forum, and be moved out of it's incredibly buried spot in Computers.

1) Graphic design has very little to do with the discipline of computing, particularly the type of talk that goes on in that forum anyway.

2) It is probably not well known that CGR has a Graphics forum, leading to its lack of use. I propose a promotion to the front page.

3) Graphic Design is currently in Academic. Graphic Design can be academic, but not in the sense that the other forums in Academic are Academic. Design is communication. Design is BOLD. Design is Art. Design is Soul! Designers don't simply make "Graphics", Designers make great design! Graphics is currently in the same section as Foreign Languages and Government and Economics. The most closely related topic to Graphic Design is Visual & Performing Arts, also possibly Photography (why is Visual & Performing Arts in "Entertainment" anyway?).

4) Design is more all encompassing. I'll keep the title "Graphic Design" as to not confuse the folk about what exactly Design entails, but this forum could be helpful for Web Designers, Industrial Designers, and Visual Communication Designers. Design sounds infinitely more classy than "Graphics" anyway.

5) The "Graphics mods" don't even post in their own forum. Pat hasn't posted there since March... Gustin hasn't posted there since 2008! Wesley hasn't posted there since 2007!! Three mods, neglecting their own little poor sub-forum... You see, the problem is they are also the Computers mods, and thus may not have interest in Graphic Design, whereas someone like, I don't know... ME, might have a great time modding a hypothetical Graphic Design forum.

In other words, the Graphics forum is depressed. It needs a makeover.

I might not ever post in the new "Graphic Design" forum, but I support you! The forum could still be used for what the description says too, which is requesting avatars and such.

I'm also confused why Visual & Performing Arts is in "Entertainment" when most of what goes on in there is people discussing visual and performing arts that they have created or want to create.

I definitely support this, as well as moving Visual & Performing Arts to Hobbies/Interests. I might not post in those areas much at all, but that would make more sense.

Definitely supported. It gets lost and is almost solely used for "Please help my youth group find a logo" threads now.

As to visual & performing arts being in entertainment... my understanding was that it was more designed to discuss theatre and artwork in the entertainment sense (the same way TV/Movies was used)... obviously the forum sort of evolved on it's own into more of a Hobbies category, so I'd be all for the moving of that as well..

As for that, 6 of the 8 threads with posts since 2009 are all logo requests. I still read and moderate the forum, but I don't have much to add to the conversation since I don't do a lot of design work anymore. Which I suppose further solidifies your point, but I wouldn't call it neglecting.

I wholeheartedly support moving/rename that forum. It will generate more traffic to it (it's hard to generate much less traffic at present), it will be modded by those specifically interested in the discipline (and not just those who enjoy computing), and it will hopefully open up the discussion a good deal more than can be done while it is a subforum under computers.

As a hobbyist graphic designer wannabee, I concur. Let's unbury the forum.

I suppose it makes sense to have Visual and Performing Arts under the entertainment. Maybe we need a separate sub-forum under Hobbies and Interests that would be more of an Arts and Crafts type forum. For discussing things like drawing, painting, knitting, basket weaving, etc.
